13th Annual Sharon’s Ride.Run.Walk for Epilepsy at DeAnza Cove

About 1 in 62 San Diegans’ lives are affected by epilepsy, but you wouldn’t know it by looking at them.

“Epilepsy is a very different neurological condition,” says Hannah Williams, event and outreach coordinator at the Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego County. “You can’t look at someone and tell they have it. If you have never seen someone have a seizure, you might never know they are affected. Therefore, many people with epilepsy do not share their condition and do not receive the support they need.”

On Sunday, April 15, thousands of people from across the County will show their support for the 50,000 San Diegans (and 3 million Americans) who have been diagnosed with the condition at the largest epilepsy awareness walk/ride in the country.

The 13th Annual “Sharon’s Ride.Run.Walk for Epilepsy” at DeAnza Cove in Mission Bay aims to raise public awareness about epilepsy, reduce the stigma of seizures, and raise funds for the free programs and services of the Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego County, which is located in North Park at El Cajon Boulevard and Alabama.

“This event is really powerful for our families,” says Williams. “Most families affected by epilepsy feel isolated. When they show up at Sharon’s Ride and see 2500 people that have some type of connection to epilepsy, they are overwhelmed with emotion.”

The event begins with a 15-mile bike ride at 8:45 a.m. and a 5K walk/run beginning at 9:30 a.m. followed by bay-side festivities and a free lunch from Pat & Oscars and a barbecue hosted by the world-famous Phil’s BBQ.

Register at 7:30 a.m. on the day of the event ($35/adult, $15/kids) or in advance ($25/adult, $10/kids, 6 and under/free).

All proceeds benefit the Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego County’s free programs and services.

Since 1954, the Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego County has been leading the fight to stop seizures, find a cure, and overcome the challenges created by epilepsy.
