Drugs, guns seized in massive police sweep

Yearlong narcotics investigation ends with 65 arrests

Various law enforcement agencies were kept busy yesterday morning (September 10), serving a dozen search warrants between 6 a.m. and noon that resulted in 65 arrests and sizeable drug and weapons seizures.

The sweeps, dubbed “Operation Mountain Shadow,” are the culmination of a yearlong drug investigation focusing on the communities of Poway and Ramona.

The total haul included 93 pounds of methamphetamine, 56 pounds of cocaine, 14 pounds of heroin, 5 pounds of prescription pills, and 30 grams (about one ounce) of marijuana. Authorities also confiscated $230,000 in cash, 76 firearms, and a live grenade.

All of those arrested face federal charges of conspiracy to distribute controlled substances, more charges are likely forthcoming. Depending on the severity of charges and arrestees’ prior records, they face sentences ranging from probation to 25 years’ imprisonment.

A lot of the dope biz moved from El Cajon, Spring Valley, Santee, and Lakeside, up the road to more-rural Poway and even Ramona, where there are a lot fewer police. What fascinates me the most about the illegal drugs trade is the connections with both the Mafia and the Political Parties at the same time!
