As office sex charges swirl, mayor reports getting new leather sofa

Furniture retailer owned by DeMaio backer provides Filner's office with stylish new office pieces, including "deep t-cushions on the seat for cool comfort”

The alleged sexual harassment case swirling around San Diego mayor Bob Filner has pretty well eclipsed - at least for the time being - city hall's previous preoccupation with the infamous Sunroad scandal, involving Filner's behesting of $100,000 by the firm to two Filner favored charities. The money was subsequently returned.

As previously noted here, the so-called practice of behesting - in which a private donor gives cash or another form of gratuity to a charity or government agency on behalf of an elected official - has even entangled San Diego sheriff and ex-FBI Special Agent in Charge Bill Gore.

Fresh filings by Filner now reveal that some of his recent behests have struck a bit closer to home.

According to a behesting disclosure statement signed July 9 and posted online yesterday by the city clerk's office, Filner has accepted a total of $3,154 (including tax) worth of furniture for the mayor's office from Jerome's Furniture.

A cream bonded leather sofa from the Samuel Collection by Coaster Furniture cost $459; two matching chairs were $699.98; two accent chairs in Zenith Chocolate ran $798; and a set of end tables were $259.

Says the company's website:

The pieces are crafted of sophisticated bonded leather, over a solid hardwood frame with webbed backs and sinuous spring bases for support and durability.

These pieces feature plush tufted attached back cushions, and deep t-cushions on the seat for cool comfort.

Sleek track arms and square tapered wood legs complete the look. These simple pieces are easy to blend with your home decor, and will help you create the comfortable contemporary style you desire.

The mayor's behest report says the furniture is needed "To provide safe and comfortable seating for visitors and foreign dignitaries attending meetings with the Mayor and the Mayor's Staff."

After Filner won last year's mayoral election, city campaign finance records show, Jerome's owner Jerome Navarra gave Filner's campaign a $500 contribution, but most of his and his family and employees' political money has gone to the GOP, including $28,750 to the Lincoln Club and $10,000 to Taxpayers for DeMaio, a group that made independent campaign expenditures on behalf of ex-councilman Carl DeMaio.

In addition to getting his new furniture, the mayor took some time away from the office to attend a Xolos soccer game at Petco Park on July 6.

His purpose for use of two free tickets from the city valued at $108 each: "Promotion of San Diego on a worldwide scale."
