On Tuesday, September 12 County supervisors will consider implementing the E-Verify system. E-Verify, otherwise known as the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification System, will screen all candidates for county jobs using data from the Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration as a way to verify job eligibility.
The proposal to bring E-verify to San Diego County has raised concerns from from the ACLU and other advocacy groups.
"E-Verify...is rife with problems," reads the website for San Diego's chapter of the ACLU. "It has produced inaccurate results, adds costs to businesses large and small, and builds in incentives--based on those costs--for businesses to engage in racial profiling."
Despite the opposition, county supervisors appear to be moving forward. In the staff report for Tuesday's agenda, county staff recommend adopting the program.
"Implementing E-Verify will enhance identity and employment verification, which will ensure the County of San Diego maintains a legal work force and protects jobs for authorized workers."
