Festival Norte Sonoro: international DJs remix Tijuana

Tijuana through the ears of the world, this Friday on Revolucion

DJ Rupture

Last November, Northern Mexico music promoters NRMAL invited six international DJs to stay in Monterrey with host Toy Selectah (Mad Decent's cumbia/guarachero innovator and foundational member of the Sonidero Nacional music collective) to remix traditional songs recorded by local, contemporary performers.

The result was showcased in the first annual Festival Norte Sonoro featuring DJs Algodón Egipcio (Venezuela), Chancha Vía Circuito (Argentina), DJ Rupture (New York), Helado Negro (Ecuador/Brooklyn), Mumdance (UK), and White Rainbow (Portland) remixing cumbia, canto cardenche, and norteña songs (among other styles).

Local artists Javier Villarreal (Bronco), Los Cardencheros de Sapioriz, Grupo Esencias, and Osvaldo Lizcano with Enlace Vallenato played these traditional styles for the recording from which the DJs' samples were taken.

This Friday, November 16, Festival Norte Sonoro will debut in Tijuana with guest curator DJ Rupture, Cardopusher (Venezuela), Poirier (Canada), Psilosamples (Brasil), Sun Araw (US), and Venus X (US) remixing the regional sounds of corrido Sierreño, indigenous songs, banda Sinaloense, and the prominent tuba lines characteristic of a gritty narco ballad genre called movimiento alterado.

The festival follows a week-long mini-residency in which ruidoson pioneers Los Macuanos introduced the guest DJs to the sights and sounds of Tijuana.

“Through musical experimentation, this project seeks to establish a dialogue between sounds and musicians of northern Mexico with international artists,” NRMAL writes on their website.

“…guest artists will have the opportunity not only to work in a music studio with local sounds, but to be able to understand the context and the current landscape of one of Mexico’s most exciting cities.”

The show starts at 7 p.m. at Leyva’s Paradise (1026 Revolución Avenue –between Sixth and Seventh), a fifteen minute walk or a five dollar cab ride from the border.

RSVP your spot - this event is first come, first served, and is expected to meet capacity.
