Where do the Aztecs stand in the Mountain West?

SDSU is 4-2 in conference play and tied for second place.

The Aztecs started conference play in the Mountain West with inconsistent play. After two wins against Fresno St and Colorado St, the Aztecs dropped their next two against UNLV and Wyoming. Since then, they have rebounded with a win against Nevada on the road and a dominating victory over (then #15) New Mexico at Viejas Arena. The Aztecs are 4-2 in conference play and in a four way tie for second place with UNLV, Colorado State and Air Force. The Aztecs face Air Force on Saturday February 2nd, in what few thought would be a crucial Mountain West match-up.

SDSU has already beat the first place team in the Mountain West Conference (New Mexico) and one of the teams they are tied with (Colorado State). On the other hand, they lost at home to UNLV, one of the other teams they are tied with for second place. A lingering injury to Xavier Thames may be the cause for the inconsistent play. We saw the same thing last year when he missed a few games. Thames is the Aztecs floor general and really drives the offense. Both he and Chase Tapley may miss Saturday’s contest against Air Force, which would be a big blow to SDSU.

The next three games are all very winnable for the Aztecs and they need to capitalize. They face an Air Force team they are tied with on the road, then play Boise St and Fresno St at home. They need to win all three match-ups because after that, their conference schedule becomes increasingly difficult. They travel to Colorado St, UNLV and UNM, while facing a pesky Nevada squad and Wyoming team that already beat them at home. Winning the next three match-ups is crucial if they hope to win the Mountain West Conference for the third consecutive year.
