International Women's Day

Festa Della Donna at Cucina Urbana in Bankers Hill

First, a bit of history. It was in 1945 that the Union of Italian Women declared March 8 as Festa Della Donna (Women's Day), a day to celebrate and honor women. Though inspiration for this decision was inspired by events long before. On March 8, 1857, female garment workers in New York went on strike and then formed the first women's union in America. On March 8, 1917, women in Russia went on strike for "bread and peace."

The symbol for this day is the yellow mimosa flower (people gift them to each other to express solidarity for the awesomeness that is woman). I found this particularly fascinating, as before today, I thought the "mimosa" was merely a name for my favorite breakfast cocktail. Fortunately, at least one event to celebrate this day in San Diego involves cocktails. On March 8, female-owned Cucina Urbana is offering a portion of the day's proceeds to the local non-profit, Center for Community Solutions, an organization that provides assistance to victims of domestic violence and elder abuse. From March 8 through March 10, special Festa Della Donna t-shirts will be on sale, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the non-profit.

There will also be a few special menu items available just for the weekend, including the Baci di Donna (Ladies Kiss) cocktail, with muddled strawberry, fresh lemon, vodka, and St. Germain; and a dessert, Bigne con Miele, a honey puff-pastry filled with saffron cream.

Now all I need to do is figure out where I can score some yellow mimosas (which are native to Australia) in San Diego.
