Rooftop Brunch to Usher in Year Two at Pizza Port OB

It takes some businesses a long time to get off the ground. The same can't be said for Pizza Port's Ocean Beach brewpub. Since day one, the place has been heavily patronized (in a good way) by people from all walks of life in search of doughy discs of piled high pies and top notch beers to wash them down with.

In addition to enjoying a steady and loyal clientele, the venue's brewing component has racked up a number of honors. Most impressive among them was being named the best small brewpub in the nation in 2011, barely over a year after celebrating a year on Bacon Street.

Seven months later, it's time for Pizza Port OB to celebrate another year gone by. Their vehicle for doing so - a five-course gourmet brunch on the building's secluded rooftop this Sunday, May 20 from 12:30 to 4 p.m.. Most people aren't even aware this party pad exists. It is, after all, directly atop another hidden away spot - a private apartment on the opposite side of Pizza Port's west wall.

The apartment's kitchen will be the base of operations for the young beer-and-food-geared gastronomes catering the affair. Local chef outfit The Trenchermen have developed a menu that includes such fine dishes as candied duck braised in Pizza Port's farmhouse ale and served over pain perdu (French toast).

That dish and all of the others on the menu will be paired with beers produced on site by head brewer Yiga Miyashiro and company. Miyashiro will be pulling out his brewhouse's best, including Jetty (their hoppy house IPA), Flying Hawaiian Hefeweizen, and an imperial breakfast (or, in this case, brunch) coffee porter called Bacon and Eggs (which you may remember from one of my April posts). The latter was recently named the best coffee beer on Earth at the vaunted World Beer Cup (WBC) competition along with ABLE, an American stout that took bronze two years after earning a silver at the 2010 WBC.

Duck French toast, Olympian-esque brews, and a chance to mingle with the people who make them at a secret rooftop mid-day throw down. Sounds like a Sunday in the church of SD suds. Tickets are available online. Pizza Port Ocean Beach is located at 1956 Bacon Street.
