A month ago, I shared details on Karl Strauss Brewing Company’s expansion of their production facility. That project, which is scheduled to debut in late summer, includes installation of a 20-tap bar, outdoor beer garden, private event spaces and a tour deck. It’s plenty ambitious all on its own, but that’s just one component of what will be the biggest summer in the company’s history.
In addition to aesthetic and architectural changes being made for the visiting public, Karl Strauss’ production brewery is also undergoing a utilitarian expansion that will include installation of new equipment to increase their annual production to 80,000 barrels. That represents a 31% increase from the amount of beer they produced in 2011.
The need to pump out more beer comes, not only from increased demand on the home front, but as a direct result of their recent decision to begin distributing beer in Northern California. Since opening in 1989 as San Diego’s first brewery post-Prohibition, Karl Strauss has made and sold all of their beer in Southern California, making this a significant move and one that figures to help them keep growing. As it stands, they are the 44th largest craft brewing company in the country and one of the three fastest-growing breweries in the Western U.S.
Tempering the out-of-region move is one more large-scale project. Come July, Karl Strauss intends to open its seventh brewery restaurant in north San Diego’s 4S Ranch community. That spot will join the company’s family of four San Diego-based beer-producing eateries in Downtown, La Jolla, Sorrento Mesa, and Carlsbad and bring 100 open employment opportunities to the area.
The 4S Ranch brewing facility will be located at 10448 Reserve Drive. Karl Strauss’ production facility is located at 5985 Santa Fe Street in Pacific Beach.
