It's hard to believe, but there was a time when women couldn't be out on the streets of San Diego past 10 p.m. without an escort. The punishment for females who didn't abide by this mandate: a prompt jailing.
Frances Woods, a woman of means and high standing in the community, rightfully found this outrageous and used the tools at her disposal to strike a deal with the sheriff where, if she were willing to take women nabbed for missing curfew and provide them lodging overnight, he would turn them over to her. Woods and colleagues from the League of Women Voters and San Diego Women's Club pooled their energies and funds to rent a hotel for the women they bailed out.
This is how the Big Sister League of San Diego was born. 70 years later, the organization has evolved to assist a broad range of women in-need. Whether they are victims of rape, abuse, neglect or mental illness, the BSL is ready to take them in, house them, and provide the support necessary to empower them past the hurdles they face. The BSL operates two houses, one of which is in need of a new roof. A number of contractors are donating time and materials to the effort, but it will still take a significant amount of funding to complete the work.
In order to raise money for their share of the costs, BSL is teaming with numerous restaurants throughout San Diego County that have agreed to set aside one day of the month of April to help them out. On each eatery's scheduled date, they will provide the BSL with 20% of all proceeds received from diners who download promotion fliers from the BSL website. The following is the schedule for BSL's Donation Dining Fundraiser:
