Bracket Breakdown: Division IV

Francis Parker guard Dalante Dunklin defended by Army-Navy guard Jonathan Mosley on the perimeter. Dunklin’s defending champion Lancers are the top seed in Division IV.

Division IV

(1) Francis Parker (19-7)

(8) Santa Fe Christian (8-17) vs. (9) Christian (12-14)

(5) Army-Navy (14-11) vs. (12) Preuss (10-13)

(4) Coronado (23-5)

(3) Bishop’s (12-14)

(6) Mater Dei (15-11) vs. (11) Calipatria (12-14)

(7) Imperial (17-9) vs. (10) Guajome Park (13-7)

(2) La Jolla Country Day (15-11)

First Round Wednesday, Feb. 23 7 p.m. (top four seeds receive byes)

Quarterfinals Saturday, Feb. 26 7 p.m.

Semifinals Wednesday, March 2 7 p.m.

Finals Saturday, March 5 11:15 a.m. at University of San Diego

Breakdown

Favorite (1) Francis Parker

The defending Division IV section champs, top-seed Francis Parker enters the postseason in prime position to repeat. The Lancers won the Coastal League after playing a tough preseason schedule and are the team to beat as they look to defend their crown.

Sleeper (5) Army-Navy

Schooled for the first year by longtime local coach Tom Tarantino, Army-Navy has to be considered a threat despite not receiving a top four seed. Throw in 7-footer Cheikh Ndiaye and fast frosh guard Devin Watson, and the Warriors are wired for a deep tournament run.

First Round Upset (9) Christian over (8) Santa Fe Christian

The Coastal League is the best small school league in the section, so good that Santa Fe Christian is hosting a first round game despite a 1-9 league mark. Christian will probably be thinking about that on the long drive from El Cajon to Solana Beach.

Star Watch Eric Norman, Francis Parker

Take a second to think of a local Division I hoops recruit not named Norman Powell or Angelo Chol. The answer is Eric Norman, the Lancers’ 6’9” senior forward headed to Southern Methodist next year. Norman fits in nicely with a well-schooled Francis Parker team, and has good speed and shooting range for his size. He’s not afraid to throw a dunk down on the fast break, either.

Potential Matchup to See Semifinals (2) La Jolla Country Day vs. (3) Bishop’s

Separated by six miles, private school rivals La Jolla Country Day and Bishop’s could meet with a finals appearance on the line. The Torreys won each of the two regular season matchups by double digits, but a playoff rematch should play closer.
