Baja & Border News Translations: Mexico Navy Rescues 2 Adrift at Sea; Officer’s Gun Fired, Partner Conceals the Incident

Mexico Navy Rescues 2 Adrift at Sea (AFN, 10/20/12)

TIJUANA, BC - The Navy of Mexico reported the rescue of two people adrift in a boat near the Coronado Islands, south of Tijuana. The crew members were transferred to land safely.

In compliance with a main function of the Secretariat of the Navy of Mexico, the protection of human life at sea, personnel ascribed to the second Naval Region, based in Ensenada, Baja California, yesterday helped a boat under the name "Karla", reported a federal authority.

The craft was adrift with two crew members on board in the vicinity of the beaches of Rosarito and Tijuana. A support vessel responded when the fishermen called stating that they had problems with the engine, 11 kilometers to the South of the Coronado Islands.

It was reported the Navy immediately provided support with an Interceptora patrol which was conducting surveillance activities in the northern area, and the boat was towed to the vicinity of the port of Salinas, Ensenada, with its two crew members in good health. http://www.afntijuana.info/seguridad/13565_naufragan_pescadores_frente_a_islas_coronado

Officer’s Gun Fired, Partner Conceals the Incident (AFN, 10/20/12)

Playa Rosarita, BC - The director of Municipal public security, Francisco Castro Trenti, reported they initiated proceedings before the municipal audit office against tourism police officers, Guadalupe Valero and José Alberto Pérez Crosthwaite, responsible for accidentally detonating a gun in a public place and by alleged concealing it.

When the policewoman was in a toilet at a petrol station, she removed the weapon which accidentally slipped producing the detonation when it fell to the floor, it was noted. The partner sought to protect Valero by not reporting the facts in a timely manner to superiors.

The firing caused material damage in the lavatory, and having knowledge of the facts, managers of the establishment went to a supervisor of the Municipal police, reported they would not be responsible for the repair of furniture noticing damages caused by the accident.

"The municipal Audit Office shall be the body responsible for carrying out the investigation and providing administrative sanctions against both elements. In the case of Valero, she was recklessness and there could have been more serious consequences in the event people were in the vicinity of the detonation. In the case of Crosthwaite, he committed a serious omission, because any facts reported about any agent should be immediately reported to superiors,” explained Castro Trenti.

The director of Municipal Public Security reaffirmed instructions of the Mayor, Javier Robles Aguirre, to maintain an approach of zero tolerance for any acts or of lack of professionalism, discipline, disloyalty or corruption committed by any element of the department, so they can further form an honest, responsible and dedicated service for the population. http://www.afntijuana.info/seguridad/13566_investigan_disparo_accidental_de_mujer_policia
