Border News Translations 29: Police Commander Killed

SanDiegoRed TIJUANA - At least 22 shots were fired at the Commander of the Federal Preventive Police (PFP), Guillermo Plata Camacho on the morning of April 15. He was killed when a commando attacked him on Airport Boulevard in the Otay district, according to a report of the State Prosecutor's Office. The case was of immediate interest to the Attorney General of the Republic, and as the investigation progresses some information can be made public, said the news release. The veteran official was gunned down at 11 in the morning. His body was found outside patrol vehicle #09789 he was driving. At the scene of the crime, experts found eleven shells from a 9 mm weapon and eleven shells from a 40 mm.

Born 50 years ago in Cuernavaca, Morelos, he served half of his life as a federal officer and was the commander of the PFP station in the village of San Quentín, South of Ensenada. St. Quentin and the area of Ojos Negros have had a significant growth of plantations of marijuana in the mountains, valleys, ranches and towns in the past two years, according to the authorities.

A source at the federal prosecutor's office, not authorized to give information, pointed out that the Commander was going to carry out a Customs Agency AYALA procedure at the Colonia airport when he was surprised by the assassins. "The way that killed him might link his death to drug trafficking. They had apparently been following and knew where he would stop his vehicle," said the source.

Attacks on federal officers or commanders are not usual in this region. Since 2006, in Baja California, there have only been five murders of the Federal Investigations Agency agents, two of them commanders of this organization. The Ministry of Public Security of Tijuana had 43 municipal police officers were executed between 2007 and 2011. Since last Friday, authorities carried out a series of operations, mainly in the residential area modules of Otay, frequented by gangs infiltrated in organized crime.

During the weekend, patrols of the PFP were going with the sirens on some busy avenues in South and East parts of the city and stopped drivers who seemed suspicious to them. No official results of these operations have been given released… By Omar Millán
