This week all roads lead to the Ken Cinema

Can't get tickets for Comic-Con? Lucky you! Instead of being taken at the Con, drop in on the double feature of double-crosses opening Friday at Landmark's Ken Cinema.

Godard in 35mm? You should have already purchased tickets. A double feature of Godard and Melville in 35mm? There should be a line of lawn chairs loaded with guys and gals wearing fedoras and dangling Gitanes snaking around the corner in anticipation of Friday's 1:50pm showing of Le Petit Soldat and Un Flic.

Fortunately the Ken didn't throw away its antique booth equipment and both lovingly restored films will screen in 35mm.

How many more times is this town likely to experience 35mm revivals? I beg that you encourage this type of behavior by catching this combo before it skips town.

As for the big Con, I've never had the energy to write a piece on San Diego's annual tribute to everything that's wrong with contemporary cinema. This piece by Danny Baldwin at Critic Speak comes close to echoing my deep-seated disapproval.

Click to open my review of the Melville. You emo Twi-hards enjoy the Smurfs, and Wolverines, and all the Cosplay. Frankly, I was surprised to hear that he was still touring in his one-man show.
