One owner 1966 Batmobile for sale

Designer George Barris hopes to fetch millions of da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-dollars at auction

Holy motors, Batman! No, not that pretentious Leos Carax bore. The original Batmobile hits the auction block this January.

The Gotham City gas guzzler was designed for the the 1966 Batman TV series by car customizer extraordinaire George Barris. Unlike other celebrity rides that have duplicate cars produced for promotional means or to accommodate varying camera angles, this is the one and only Batmobile designed for the show. Barris is the car's sole owner.

Next to The Munsters coach and Grandpa's Dragula (both designed by Barris) and 007's Aston Martin (it sold for $4.6 million in 2010), the Batmobile -- with its optional flame thrower, oil slick propellent, and Ben-Hur-style tire shredders -- is probably the coolest celebrity car on the planet.

The Batmobile was pattered after a 1955 Lincoln Futura concept car. Under pressure from 20th Century Fox to produce a car, Barris decided to refurnish a Lincoln Mark II as opposed to reinventing the wheel.

Barris hope the car will fetch millions, but in an interview given to CNN, Jonathan Klinger, with the collector car insurance firm Hagerty Insurance, "thinks the Batmobile will probably sell for a few hundred thousand dollars. The trouble, he said, is that there are so many very good Batmobile replicas around."

The closest many of us will ever come to owning a piece of the 'Mobile is this 1966 Corgi die-cast scale replica.
