Uggie's Fame Cemented at Grauman's Chinese

Scorsese's hand and footprints have yet to be immortalized in front of Grauman's Chinese Theatre. Who needs Marty when the brilliance of Kobe Bryant (I've seen all his movies) and now Uggie, the pooch from The Artist, have been forever cemented?

Uggie is the first dog to leave its paw prints in the famous cement garden? Am I the only one who finds this shocking? Old Yeller's prints would probably elicit more tears than smiles, but what about Toto and Asta? Or Bogie's pal Pard in High Sierra? Surely they had an extra slab of Sakrete lying around to memorialize Benji, Lassie, and Rin Tin Tin.

Uggie's trainer, Omar Van Muller, pleaded with the crowd to adopt a pet. Van Muller reminded the gathering that Uggie was adopted. "If you guys can adopt a dog," he said, "even if they don't make it on the big screen, they'll be big stars at your house."

The ceremony was tinged by sorrow when it was announced that Uggie is retiring from acting. In the future, the canine star of such dogs as Mr. Fix It and Water for Elephants will only appear at charity events.

No word yet whether the Aussies plan to come out with a line of Uggie shoes to commemorate the occasion.
