SDMA's Annual Screen on the Green Kicks Off This Saturday Night

It’s been 13 years since I crash landed in San Diego and in that time I have yet to witness a more unexpected choice of a movie to screen outdoors, let alone in conjunction with a museum exhibition.

The Invention of Glory: Afonso V and the Pastrana Tapestries, now through September 9 at the San Diego Museum of Art, features the recently restored set of four monumental tapestries that commemorate the deeds of Afonso V, King of Portugal.

Robert Taylor stars opposite Elizabeth Taylor (no relation) in Richard Thorpe’s Ivanhoe. The only things the former matinee has in common with these late 1400s tapestries is they can fill a wall and are good to look at.

Still, who in San Diego is rushing to screen Ivanhoe? I can’t urge you enough to bring lawn furniture and picnic baskets to Balboa Park this Saturday night when Screen on the Green kicks off its summer season with action and romance in Ivanhoe.

The following week brings John Huston’s caper comedy Beat the Devil, starring Humphrey Bogart, Gina Lolobrigida, and Peter Lorre. Note to SDMA programmers: BTD has fallen into the public domain and most DVD copies are muddy dupes. May I suggest this pressing.

The series wraps on August 4 when SDMA teams with the San Diego Asian Film Festival to present Love Aaj Kal. Never one for Bollywood -- it all looks like a 2-hour commercial for Yardage Town -- I still feel it my sworn duty to promote anything SDAFF gets behind.

All showings commence at sundown, but you are advised to arrive early. Admission is free. Movies screen on the East lawn adjacent to the museum.
