Steaks & Classic Cinema in Greystone's Historic Rivoli Theatre Building

The classic movie component will probably amount to little more than the cinematic equivalent of background music, but who cares when you can dine with the ghosts of movies past in the historic confines of San Diego's premier steakhouse?

What's the hook? Greystone Steakhouse, located at 658 Fifth Ave., first opened its doors as the Rivoli Theatre in 1923. The 327-seat house survived a variety of management changes throughout the years. Natives would recognize it as The Diana, The Roxy, or The Savoy Theatre. The old-time trench coat and hollowed-out popcorn box brigade go limp at the mere mention of the Bijou Theatre, Cinema XXX, and Pussycat, three "personality" changes the theatre underwent during the '70s porno boom.

Bill Schrader 236-1557: Voted Best Picture of 1976 by the Shelter Island Picayune!

Short of a rebuild, I can't think of a better way to honor the theatre's many years of loyal service than a classic film series backed by a plate of meat. If you're gonna' go the Fork 'n' Watch route, this is your first class ticket.

The series kicks off Sunday, October 9 at 8 p.m. The films include traditional favorites such as Some Like it Hot, The Philadelphia Story, Casablanca, It Happened One Night, and Brief Encounter. (Show Raging Bull and make mine rare!) There is a pre-set $40 menu and 5¢ glasses of champagne (limit one per customer), representative of the theater’s former ticket prices.
