Earth Day on the Mountain

Take a drive. Come up the hill. All kinds of things have come to life this spring above 4000 feet. Right now the lilacs are fully in bloom and can be purchased by the bunch for $5-$10 throughout town. If you can't find actual lilacs, American Gardner on Main Street has lilac-scented soap.

Word is that the Borrego desert which lies just beyond us is in full bloom as of this weekend. If you go, watch for the statue art which now adorns the desert. Dinosaurs, horses and gigantic birds were all in view when I went.

We have a new tour guide, Tony DiGiovanna (also known as DiGi) at the Eagle Mine which is just up C street. Signs in town will direct your way to a real gold mine where the guide will take you deep underground through two levels and out the the other side of the mountain. Authentic tools, machinery of the day and antique automobiles are all displayed. Tours are $10 for adults. Groups need to call ahead (760)765-0036 and talk to either Paul or Karl Nelson, owners of the mine.

FYI: Farewell and aloha to Kim Gordon, the mine's long-time tour guide, who left Julian last week to spend time with his grandchildren in Hawaii. (Maui to be exact)

Coming soon is the replacement of Lew's Coffee Shop which closed unexpectedly last month. I hope that they are not seriously going to call it Granny's Cafe which is the current plan. We have the most active and alive elders I have ever met and there are few I would refer to as a "granny."

A few of our "grannies" and gentlemen meet every Tuesday at 9am at the Julian Cafe for the weekly senior breakfast. Each week, a different guest stands and tells his or her story. Vee Lumpkins holds the no-host breakfast and can be found below the town hall most mornings. Newcomers are welcome.

One of our newest and most popular stores is closed but not for good. Knick Nacks underwent a renovation (the wood floors we re-done) and is re-opening as Mountain Emporium. It should open any day now with newly sanded and polished floors.

Pies are the claim to fame here, apple to be exact. Most places have pies: stores, bakeries, restaurants. They cost about $13 per pie. Some places, like Apple Alley have speciatly pies such as Caramel Apple Pecan. The owner Debbie will also make peach pie if you call ahead and it is worth the effort.(760-765-2532) Candied Apple has perfected a treat called the Chocolate Bomb which doesn't involve apples but is worth mentioning. Julian Pie Company has one pie called the mountain berry and I believe it is their best pie but I have only been able to find it at the bakery and it costs more than the other pies.

The Julian Cafe which is right on Main Street mixes apples to offer blended pies like apple/pumpkin and apple/boysenberry. They also offer caramel apples which look wonderful through their open window.

Costumed actors spend the day in our town on Sunday afternoons and perform comedy skits. They are officially called Julian Doves and Desperados and their shows are at 1pm, 2pm and 3pm behind the Julian's Market and Deli.

That's all. Enjoy SherryD
