Where the streets have no name
The cost to install the signs would be the "responsibility" of the Council District, per Cole's proposal? I certainly hope she clarifies that. If it's coming out of their budget, that would be wrong and if it's coming out of some special fundraising effort by the District, that would be worse. And perhaps illegal? She needs to explain if this is just new streets or old streets. Changing names of streets is very unpopular and costly to the residents or businesses. Seems as though it's kind of coming out of the blue. Is this a real priority for District 4? I doubt it.— February 11, 2016 8:50 p.m.
Families dropped from Vargas blowout fundraiser invite
I wonder how they get all the t-times for a golf group like that. It's a pretty in-demand public course. There has been lots of politics played at City Hall in the past related to use of that course. Though I must say it's been pretty quiet lately. Probably has just gone underground. Hard to understand the gall of elected officials doing all this non-stop fundraising at expensive locales. They love to say it's the "system" that makes them to do it. But in the Vargas district, I don't think he really has to fight off any competition, as you say.— February 11, 2016 8:44 p.m.
Tarnished trustee departure begets costly politics
$40,000 + from RSF charter school supporter Dammeyer in the previous District E election? That is quite a bundle of money for one school board race from one guy. Plus the other money. The donors must have thought they had a good chance to snow the voters or buy the candidate. I wonder if they will have as good a chance this time with the Weber staffer running, who seems to have a genuine interest in education. Several areas have been badly represented in recent years, but Marne Foster's service (to herself alone) has definitely been one of the worst. Her poor judgment and total lack of integrity have been embarrassing.— February 3, 2016 2:18 p.m.
Refurbished plot gets another refurbishing
That is pathetic - trying to get acts "at no or minimal cost" - I bet that is going to be quite the quality entertainment.— January 7, 2016 9:32 p.m.
How many visas overstayed? Bersin can't say
Good report. Appreciate the calling out of local & SoCal people involved in buying the elections around the state and beyond. We all have to be reminded regularly.— January 7, 2016 9:23 p.m.
Jamie Hamrick travels for free again
This should not be allowed. It is such a clear conflict of interest.— December 17, 2015 2:51 p.m.
The strings attached to SDSU's Confucius cash
"The honor comes with a $1 million grant." After reading the article, that line hit me as hilarious. But I'm sure it won't be so hilarious for long. Can't SDSU learn anything from the University of Chicago's experience? With all its highly paid staff members in the President's office and all its development people, wouldn't SDSU want to do some serious due diligence and perhaps avoid some future problems? Nah, easier just to take the money. Not good.— November 16, 2015 2:53 p.m.
Sempra’s generosity
Hey, Sempra provides a lot of jobs: people who are keeping elected officials happy at the local, state and national levels. Busy, busy.— November 12, 2015 12:42 p.m.
Juan Vargas, international hipster
No golf? He's probably saving that for his next trip when the climate is warmer. And hopefully his wife can find a nice spa to hang out in for the day. That final dinner, no doubt he was able to get some helpful tips on U. S.-German relations from one of those "Bavarians with an aristocratic bearing." Like, what kind of lederhosen to pick up. Sad, but the voters let them do it. Feel sure it never comes up at a "Town Hall" meeting. What does that man do? What does he stand for? Not much.— November 12, 2015 12:35 p.m.
Campaign cash pays for Atkins Cuba jaunt
Speaker Atkins is accusing Sen. Marty Block of dishonesty regarding the upcoming Senate race, saying that he changed his mind about running for re-election in 2016 and had promised to free up the seat for her. (The way Atkins describes it, it sounds like a deal was negotiated secretly in a smoke-filled room.) Apparently she has not been so honest herself, and/or has also changed her mind, since her Committee that was raising money was named Atkins for Senate 2020. Not too kosher.— October 19, 2015 11:34 p.m.
