El Nido
My first experience at El Nido was quite a disappointment, as I AM a vegetarian and found that the dinner menu offerings were extremely scant; I think I had a chile relleno, my old standby, and found it mediocre. My date, not wanting to indulge in heavy meat in my presence, chose plain beef tacos, so we both had standard fare found everywhere: not good choices for this very 'special occasion' place with its unique decor and history. I returned last Spring with another date as we were celebrating his birthday. Not shy about his meat consumption in front of me, he ordered a quail and steak combo. He could choose any cut of steak and opted for the rib eye. I don't even remember what my vegetarian choice was because I was pleased with the margaritas we ordered first. The vegetarian choices were still few and unimaginative, but I wasn't the guest of honor so oh well. The service was excellent, and we knew the steak was going to be good when it arrived cooked to perfection, and tender enough to cut with a fork. The look on the birthday boy's face when he had the first bite was priceless. He said it was, bar none, the best steak he'd had in his life...and he has four decades of serious steak experience. His pleasure was so obvious that I had to sample a morsel myself; it was what I imagined Kobe beef would taste like. I would definitely recommend El Nido for the quality beef (and the quail was great too, although my date had no reference point for comparison),the value for the money, and the charming decor; but don't expect a "vegetarian" menu or accommodations. Be prepared for margaritas and beans and of course that old standby, chiles rellenos, and then go to a Puerto Nuevo lobster restaurant so you can enjoy better side dishes while your lobster-eating buddies busy themselves with the lard-cooked crustaceans.— September 6, 2008 11:38 p.m.
