$4.50 to get on the 125 South freeway
Great article. The toll road has been a disaster. However, as a daily traveler from Chula Vista to Mission Valley, traffic has gone down significantly since the opening of the road. A trip that used to be 40-45 is now only 30-35 minutes. I have driven on the road several times and rarely see cars. Not sure how traffic as been reduced, but it has. Maybe it is all the UPS trucks that no longer travel the 805.— November 20, 2009 8 p.m.
U-T to Stay in Mission Valley for Now; Vows Return to Profitability
Don, One thing about the meeting that is particularly telling is the fact that Platinum posted numbers. For years, the likes of "public speaker of the year" Jessica Walker and (actually a good speaker) Randy Frisch only spouted percentages. Showing employees actual numbers should help them understand why cuts were necessary. The UT, under old management, lost 90% of its profit in 2 years according to Wednesdays meeting!!! WOW. We all agree that the papers success is vital to the region, lets hope PE can run the place better. I think that is something we can all get behind.— August 17, 2009 10:39 a.m.
Union-Tribune Axe Falls Again. Kittle Reportedly Out
Don, Burwell makes a good point and one that we should be aware of. As new companies take over newspapers with the intent to actually make a ... profit, they will realize that the expense of high price editorial opinion staff like bow tie Bob is meaningless. I would not be suprised if many papers eliminated the opinion of their papers in the not too distant future. The paper is supposed to report news, not opine on it.— August 12, 2009 10:40 p.m.
Union-Tribune Axe Falls Again. Kittle Reportedly Out
Don, Shocking once again for you to give no credence or sympathy to the other good people in this company that lost their jobs. The newsroom people are the only ones that matter anyway, right? This column, at least the part about the UT (since I agree with most of your posts on other issues), just asserts the notion of self righteousness in the newsroom. What will we ever do with out the likes of Bob Kittle or Mark Arner?!!— August 12, 2009 8:16 p.m.
Watchdog Institute Puzzles Union-Tribune Staffers
Check my temperature...You agree with Karin?!?! As I gathered my thoughts for this post, I had Don squarely in my sights. However, I commend you for siding with Winner. Many of the posts on this blog complain that the UT is not fulfilling its true post of watchdog journalism. Then they do a major watchdog piece, and since it doesnt side with your end of the story, you rip them again. Rip when it's appropriate, but don't rip, just to rip. Kudos to you Don for post siding with Karin.— July 1, 2009 8:45 p.m.
CNBC Features Tom Gores, Mike Aguirre -- Separately
Now I am not going to sit here and say that Platinum is in it for the long haul. They are a business. Their job turn the business around and to make money. While you insist that they arent investing, there is no mention of the fact that they have agreed to a contract with a pagination company. Surely your insiders have told you that? That is much further than Copley ever got.— June 20, 2009 9:40 p.m.
Platinum Equity Names New Union-Tribune Publisher with Reputation for Cuts
Papergirl, You all freak out during other layoffs and buyouts that none of the senior staff is affected. Now a ton of the senior staff is affected, and you are appauled? I am so confused. If you are just going to be pissed no matter what they do, just admit it so we can understand which side you fall on. However, thank you for being the first person to acknowledge that someone outside the newsroom lost their job. Believe it or not, good people do work outside the Newsroom— May 14, 2009 9:02 a.m.
Pension Pros Warn That Hocus-Pocus Could Be Used to Lower Annual Payment to System
Let us not forget the brilliant "Pension Protection Act." You know, the Act named so we would all think that the Bush administration protecting our pensions. In fact, all it did was protect the companies offering pensions by allowing them to fund plans at lower levels. Note that effective 1-1-09, lumps sums started to be reduced every year as this Pension Protection Act kicks in...to protect big companies.— April 16, 2009 10:38 p.m.
Copley Puts Tiny Borrego Sun Up for Sale
Sorry to dissapoint johnny, just a long timer who was treated well over the years and hates to see the lies that hellcat spews.— November 28, 2008 11:01 p.m.
Copley Puts Tiny Borrego Sun Up for Sale
Hellcat, You of all people should know that the UT DOES offer DP partnerships if you are register as per the law. I should know, I had them for years. As for the Pension, it CAN go to RDP. Are you just spewing hate, or do you research anything before you write it.— November 28, 2008 7:46 p.m.
