Dig a hole: Noise reduction pioneer Ray Dolby
Dig a *soundproof* hole:Noise reduction pioneer Ray Dolby? To be even more callous I would've photoshoped a picture of a tomb stone with a sign next to it that says "Grave presented in stereo where available." Like I used to see on the bottom of old Simpsons episodes.— September 12, 2013 6:35 p.m.
A fleck on the fanboy's windshield
I'm glad I heard this news here first. But for a guy like Affleck who has two (?) oscars what does he gain from this? What could he bring to this part that he didn't in "Daredevil"?— August 25, 2013 12:58 a.m.
4th row center: Fruitvale Station
Does this prove American audiences don't deserve anything nice and/or worthwhile in their cinemas or is this exhibit A in why so many movies seem to pack their audio and sound tracks with constant noise-for-noise's sake? In any case, you proved your self a true gentleman by not quoting Fincher's Zodiac movie. "I'm going to throw your baby out the window." would sound weird coming out of Popeye. It does explain why swee' pea's so troublesome though.— August 6, 2013 1:08 a.m.
Anatomy of an ad campaign: North by Northwest
Back in 1975 did you buy those 8 x 10s from "Jungle" Jim Aubrey working the the casino gift shop or did you pry them loose from Kerkorian's over-grown, crusty fingernails...? I'm sorry for how "inside baseball" that comment was.— July 23, 2013 4:38 p.m.
Melville’s money movie
"one half-expects Godzilla’s paw to come crashing down and finish Delon’s job for him." Doesn't Godzilla prefer Jean-Paul Belmondo? Ah Hell, give me Gamara, that rocket-powered giant turtle knew to call for back-up when he's confronted by armed thugs! But on a more academic note, does "Army of Shadows" seem like his filmography's rosetta stone to anyone? I watched "Le Deuxieme Souffle" and it felt a little cold and had an impressive preoccupation with the time spent hiding and a lot of details obsessed over or altogether subtracted. Kind of a daunting first encounter with his films. Then after watching Shadows it made sense.— July 18, 2013 1:46 a.m.
Spielberg enters his Ford period
To top both John Ford and Fritz Lang, Stevie will wear both eye patch and monocle underneath a fine set of opera glasses to see through his viewfinder a view-master. It's just his child-like sense of wonder.— July 18, 2013 1:19 a.m.
This week all roads lead to the Ken Cinema
I'm envious, so should more movie addicts....(sigh) I live near a city that should try harder to do right by the movie starved fans. The Dallas Film Society is currently trying to kill our enthusiasm for more adventurous cinema revivals. Their recent slate for the month in the "Cinemark Classic Series" is "Back to the Future" on the 14th & 17th, "Animal House" on the 21st & 24th, "American Graffiti" (don't have a brain aneurysm, Marks it's the only Lucas film on their schedule) on the 28th and 31st, "Ghostbusters" on the 4th & 7th of August, and lastly for the pantheon of cinema of ye forgotten lore, "Dirty Dancing" on the 11th & 14th. Bleak stuff considering you can rent any one of those and watch it at home (sans 40 foot screen, big sound and audience reactions). To set you off on your near fatal stroke, I should mention that they're BIG into Speilberg, so much so they dedicated their four movies of June to him.— July 18, 2013 1:01 a.m.
Grown Ups 2 and cartoon sequel take in more money than Pacific Rim
"I would like to think that a negative review in these pages would have robbed the film's $42.5M opening weekend take of at least $16.00." Is that $16.00 for the admission ticket or $15.75 for the ticket and 25 cents for a signed apology from the multiplex manager for allowing a Sandler movie in his big concrete crematorium (on toilet paper given the content of the movie). But seriously, my flimsy memory recalls a consumer poll on the most recent "Fast & Furious" movie just to find out who the f*** pays to watch these movies. One of those need to be conducted on the audiences of the "Resident Evil", Sandler "Comedy" and "Underworld" sequels.— July 16, 2013 12:28 a.m.
4th row center: The Corvette Summer rain check
"easily the best film Mark Hamill has ever appeared in." Was "The Big Red One" any good? Dammit, I'll just have to find a DVD of that at Big Lots to find out!— July 9, 2013 6:51 p.m.
Bruck you, Masked Man! 4 cures for the common Lone Ranger
Is it just my imagination, or does Tonto look like he smoked the peace pipe and the Lone Ranger look like Space Ghost in the 90's from "Space Ghost: Coast to Coast" in that top picture?— July 4, 2013 12:28 a.m.
