A slice of history in the midst of Ocean Beach, the locale hosting Winstons dates back to 1986. Beginning in 1990, Bill Winston transformed a blues and biker bar into a popular hangout for a younger crowd that displayed a keen interest in reggae and jam bands.
The club retains that sense of all things hippie. That means Dead tributes and jam bands and reggae groups and such, but some fairly hefty national blues-rock acts have rolled through there as well, including Lucky Peterson, Poppa Chubby, Jimmy Thackeray, and the late Bugs Henderson. Steel Pulse and Slightly Stoopid have been there, and ’80s favorites the Blitz Brothers chose the Winstons stage for their first reunion. Massive improvement: the west wall now opens out onto the sidewalk. You get daylight, ocean air, and no shortage of people-watching.
The venue also hosts early evening entertainment such as trivia and comedy, as well as a longtime karaoke night hosted by Jose Sinatra.

I totally agree with 1redhead. As a musician who has played just about everywhere, Winston's is one of the best venues of it's size around, & by far the best in OB. Come on by this Thursday, July 2nd to kick off your 4th of July weekend with a blast, when my band "That'70s Rock Show" jams out the best rock songs from that golden era. NO COVER!!! Show starts @ 9:30pm & rocks all night long. Hope to see you there!

I used to love going to Winstons during off times during the day. I would sit around, listen to the piped in blues and rock and roll, toss back a few Coronas and read the paper. But lately, I guess Winstons only opens for the evening bands. Too bad. I miss the old days.
