Paleo Treats in North Park, owned and run by Lee Selman and her husband, Nik Hawks, touts itself as the first paleo bakery in the nation and the only one in San Diego. It launched originally from their tiny kitchen in Normal Heights and first sold at a tent in 2009 at the CrossFit Games in Northern California. Soon after, the couple grew it into a direct-to-consumer business, winning one of the Top 10 Small Businesses in America via FedEx. With a model of keeping their business small and the quality of product high, in 2017 they moved the business into its current retail space.
Offerings include chocolate bars with nuts and raisins, espresso brownies, keto options, vegan and Paleo cakes and the cult favorite cake in a jar called a Thug Cake, all of which are free of gluten, grains, dairy, and starches.
