A narrow, ever-crowded room with a long menu offering a familiar regional Italian potpourri, including reliable veal in a brandy cream sauce, “straw and hay” pesto pasta, shellfish pasta. Moderate.

Best Italian in San Diego, barr non. Always crowded but the wait is worth it!

THE GOOD THINGS: Perhaps one of the very few awesome and authentic italian restuarants in San Diego. The very attentive staff even speaks italian! I highly recommend the pork ossobuco and the duck salad. Their freshly made lobster ravioli is perfectly al dente. Parking is ample during midweek dinner service in the back lot where validation for one free hour is available after meal. Patio dining is great for people watching. Great wines are offered in the list, and knowledgeable staff will be happy to help recommend a good pairing. the music is very approproate and enjoyable. The portions are perfect. THE BAD THINGS: Definitely a place to avoid if you are not one to enjoy dining in an elbow to elbow enviroment. The dining area is neat and clean, but the front counter is a bit cluttered and disorganized. The hostess tends to be overwhelmed most of the time and can come off slightly short tempered to diners and fellow staff.

My partner and I recently visited this restaurant for the 4th time on Valentine's Day (maybe not the best time to do that given that this is the busiest day of the year for most restaurants). As usual, the food was faultless. My problems with this restaurant have always been the inadequate service. Valentine's Day (with a full house) only made things worse. I made a reservation 7 days in advance, hoping that I could get a 6:30 time slot-only to be told that the restaurant was expecting 200 people around that time (there is no way that this restaurant could hold 200 people) so I changed it to 5:30 PM. Once we arrived, we were seated outside on a cold windy night next to a heater that was not working (you would think that the management would make sure that an outdoor heater was working on the busiest restaurant night of the year) Unfortunately this was the only table they had available. Oh, and as for the 200 people that were supposed to be arriving at 6:30 PM: We never saw more than 10 people at a time waiting to get into this restaurant from the time that we arrived until the time we left at 7:30 PM. The waiter was very matter of fact-no personality and unfriendly. The hostess was even worse. With all the great Italian restaurants in San Diego, I'll stay away from Arrivederci and go someplace where the service is in the same league with the food.

I went here with my family on a recent Friday night. We had a reservation which was great, because it was very busy. The food was mixed but the service was excellent. To start we had a caesar salad (average) and the soup of the day tasted like Campbell's Chicken Noodle soup base with the some garbanzo beans and carrots floating around. For entrees we had the lobster ravioli, which was good; we also had the rigatoni with sausage, about average. My dad made a special request for chicken parmesan which is not on the menu, but they were able to accomodate. It was terrific and we thought it was great that they were able to make that for us. For dessert we had the canneloni which we didn't like. The cookie/outer part was very tasty but the cream inside was not smooth and tasted mostly of sugar with very little flavor. Overall the entrees were good and I would return here for those. The service was excellent and the prices are about average.
