Local “History Alive” series continues with historian Alexander Bevil on the importance of the “Garden of the Dead,” known as “The Franciscan Garden,” located at the foot of Presidio Park. San Diego leader George Marston donated the park land in 1929, knowing how many important people were buried there. He urged civic attention, to no avail. Now Bevil is trying to finish what Marston started.

Old Town Cinco De Mayo Fiesta

Cinco de Mayo celebrates the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. A relatively minor holiday in Mexico, in the United States Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a commemoration of Mexican culture and heritage. The Old Town fiesta will have a mercado, lucha libre wrestling, Latin bands and groups on the Café Coyote Stage, mariachis, and a ballet folklorico competition in the historic state park.

In his presentation, author Philip Unitt will address surprises the atlas reveals and how it has been used in studies of rare species in need of conservation. Unitt is Curator of birds and mammals at the San Diego Natural History Museum.

Australian dream pop band the Church, will celebrate the 30th anniversary of their biggest album release, Starfish which spawned the hit single “Under the Milky Way.” That track has been heard everywhere from the Donnie Darko soundtrack to car commercials, and it’s been covered by the Killers, Sia, and others.
