Addicted to celebrity culture, two self-imposed elitists have holed up in a castle, wanting to simplify their lives and achieve pure art. They have long since lost touch with reality. Culinary historians present “Craft Beer & Spirits: American Origin & Evolution,” featuring Yuseff Cherney. Cherney will examine the argument that the discoveries of beer and bread are responsible for humanity’s ability to advance technology and develop civilizations. He will also survey the origins of the American craft beer industry and its growth from eight breweries in 1980 to over 6,000 today. And he will detail the evolution of craft distilling, and how both have grown into multi-billion dollar industries. Cherney is former head brewer of Ballast Point Brewing and Spirits and a UCSD graduate.

Mission Hills Architecture in the Roaring 20s

Single-family housing boomed across America in 1920s, and Mission Hills was teeming with development. As fortunes grew, homes ranged from humble cottages to lavish estates. New styles came: Tudor and Storybook, French and English Eclectic, and Italian Renaissance. Dominating the later ‘20s was Spanish Eclectic. Architectural historians Ron May and Diane Kane will discuss the events that led to the housing styles of Roaring Twenties. Laura Wile and Don Fay will recount (with photos) their ground-up rehabilitation of the historic “Swan House” on Alameda Drive.
