HELP! San Diego Lifeguards to the Rescue

Michael Martino, author and lifegaurd, presents the evolution of lifeguard services in San Diego. The book chronicles the early pre-lifeguard years, when citizens provided aquatic rescues in bay and ocean. The narrative follows the implementation of private lifeguards at bathhouses along the coast, and finally the creation of the city’s lifeguard service. Stick around after the presentation for a screening of the survival-drama film All is Lost.

After decades anchoring ZZ Top, guitarist Billy F. Gibbons is finally stepping out on his own for a full solo tour in support of his upcoming sophomore album, The Big Bad Blues. Album includes several new blues originals, plus covers such as “Rollin’ and Tumblin’” and “Standing Around Crying.” His backing band for this short tour features occasional Guns N’ Roses drummer Matt Sorum, singer-guitarist Austin Hanks, and harmonica player Elwood Francis. The tour opener in Ohio included ZZ Top tracks “Sharp Dressed Man” and encore of “La Grange.”

Antiques and Appraisals
Antiques, vintage collectibles and decorator items such as glass, pottery, paper ephemera, crystal, jewelry, art, silver, Americana, primitives, and European furniture: all for sale. And there’s a booth to help customers appraise unknown treasures. Appraisal team includes Jan Jessie Jacoy, fine art and Native American art; Erik Johannesen, estate jewelry; Nam Nguyen, Asian Art; and Larry Stone, San Diego Militaria and autograph dealer. Repair and restoration artisans will be present. Meet Sean Rich, known for being a prop master and owner of antique weapons on Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean, plus appearances on The History Channel and TV show Pawn Stars.

Mother Courage and Her Children
In response to Nazi Germany’s invasion of Poland in 1939, Bertholt Brecht wrote this play in just over a month. In it, Mother Courage runs a cart-canteen in the Thirty Years War, selling provisions to soldiers in an effort to profit from the conflict, all the while caring for her three children.
