Former Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley has spent around a decade living in San Diego, where he teamed up with local singer Rachael Gordon (they got a condo together near Balboa Park) and began planning the top-ten Billboard chart comeback that kicked into gear with his 2015 Space Invader album. Now living in Rancho Santa Fe, he’s recruited locals like Ray Brandes to help put together the recent covers album Origins: Volume 1. His Spaceman full-length is due later this year, preceded by an autobiographical single for “Bronx Boy,” and local buzz indicates that a follow-up to Origins is also in the works.

Idomeneo by W. A. Mozart
This new production by Peter Kozma will place the opera in a modern context, dealing with issues of gun violence, xenophobia, culpability, love, and sacrifice. Idomeneo is presented by Opera Neo, a “venture for the new generation of young opera singers.” Says Kozma: “The music of this opera is as deep and probing as Mozart gets, equal to his towering Requiem, the C Minor Mass, and his D Minor Piano Concerto.”

Burning Man at USD
USD unveils the massive 12-foot by 30-foot interactive sculpture it will showcase at Burning Man in late August. Unfolding Humanity is a dodecahedron with pentagonal walls that unfolds under human power, an engineered design alluding to Albrecht Dürer’s 500-year-old unsolved problem on unfolding polyhedra. When closed, the reflective interior of the sculpture will make visitors feel as though they are at the center of the universe.
