Adams Avenue will see a set by indie-rock mainstays Sebadoh on Sunday. It’s about 20 years since their lo-fi goodies Bake Sale and Harmacy came out, so I expect/hope we’ll be hearing a lot from those two records. Just look for the swarm in front of the Casbah stage (33rd Street) around 4p.... British big band the Mekons coalesced 40 years ago playing political punk and over the years evolved into something resembling angry Americana. Bull-punk? Their U.S. dates are few and far between, but the San Diego–based arts collective known as A Ship in the Woods booked them to play their new digs in Escondido (3007 Felicita Road). Quasi’s Sam Coomes is also on the bill, making this a must-see/hear/experience Sunday night. British indie hits the Crookes steal into Casbah behind this year’s Lucky Ones record. Zipper Club and Filthy Violets open that show.
Detroit’s Jessica Hernandez & the Deltas will do that soul-n-roll voodoo that they do so well at Soda Bar Monday night. Nothing new in the bins since 2014’s excellent Secret Evil set, but Ms. Hernandez says they got new tunes to share when they tour the left of the U.S. this fall with Maine-based pop-rock trio Tancred. San Diego blues-rock band Spero sets it up.... Else: the Undercover at the Office crew covers Joy Division and New Order this month...House of Blues stages English 2 Tone ska revivalists the Specials...and New York’s hardcore Madball bounces into Brick by Brick with Take Offense and World of Pain.
Alt-rock Canada band Sloan will celebrates 20 years of One Chord to Another at Casbah on Tuesday. One Chord comes in at number 9 on ChartAttack’s all-time best albums out of the Great White North, between Rush’s Moving Pictures (8) and the Tragically Hip’s Fully Completely (10). (Joni Mitchell’s Blue is number 1, btw.) L.A. ’gazers Gateway Drugs will set you up...whilst London-based PBR&B duo Oh Wonder, touring in support of their self-titled debut, sets up at the Observatory after contemporary R&B Brooklynite Kevin Garrett.
The Staten Island–based indie-rock quartet Cymbals Eat Guitars just dropped the John Congleton (War on Drugs, St. Vincent)–produced Pretty Years, a coming out for this rising band that gets its name from a Lou Reed quote: “Cymbals eat the sound of guitars.” Not on this disc, Lou, where guitars churn and burn and cut through everything but the rasp and wail of main man John D’Agostino. The anticipation surrounding Pretty Years (indie album of the year? If you’re into the ’Mats, Archers, and Springsteen, very probably) pays dividends from beginning to end, as will their show at Soda Bar, where Field Mouse and Wild Honey go first.... Otherwises: Chicago’s folk-rocking Fruit Bats land at the Hideout after our own Heavy Hawaii...L.A. ladies King grace the Casbah stage in support of their well-received dream-pop debut We Are King. Smooth-singing multi-instrumentalist Joey Dosik opens that show...while Brooklyn post-punk band Bear Hands plays the Music Box after Echo Park’s indie-pop trio Gothic Tropic.
