Public Tour: Research Vessel Sally Ride

Come aboard R/V Sally Ride, America’s newest research vessel. Owned by the U.S. Navy and operated by Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego, the 238-foot state-of-the-art ship is one of the most technologically advanced oceanographic research vessels in the world. Tour the sampling stations and laboratories where the scientists collect their data, meet some of the ship’s crew and Scripps Institution of Oceanography leaders, and see the ship’s main work deck and living spaces. Sally Ride’s primary objective is to investigate the workings of Earth’s oceans and atmosphere to help address some of the planet’s most pressing environmental challenges. The vessel is named in honor of the late Sally Ride, the first American woman in space as part of NASA’s Space Shuttle Challenger crew and member of UC San Diego’s physics faculty.

  • Select streets in North Park, Normal Heights, and City Heights
  • Free

San Diego’s only open-streets celebration returns, this time to North Park. The San Diego County Bicycle Coalition, an organization advocating for the rights of bicycle riders, hosts its fourth event to give communities a break from the usual stress of car traffic, promote local business, and encourage people to experience the neighborhood sans cars. Select streets in North Park, Normal Heights, and City Heights will be closed to automobiles and open for everyone to roll, skate, bike, or stroll along a course highlighting the heart of North Park’s business community. The route begins at Hamilton Street and branches off along parts of 30th Street, Adams Avenue, Lincoln Avenue, and University Avenue for a total of three miles. In 2013 the first CicloSDias brought nearly 10,000 San Diegans out of their cars and into the streets for a 5.2-mile route through Golden Hill, North Park, and South Park. The following two events hosted 12,000–15,000 people in Pacific Beach and Hillcrest.
