Japan post-rock bands Lite and Mouse on the Keys (which sounds like an iffy translation but is actually a nod to composer Zez Confrey’s “Kitten on the Keys”) will set up at Soda Bar Thursday night. Lite likes it mathy and tends to the noise-rock end of the instrumental-rock spectrum, while Mouse on the Keys has more of an art-rock bent incorporating jazz time sigs. Both bands are heady but full of heart, and I can’t wait to take in something this inspired. Mira Mesa’s seven-member math team Stage Kids set it up.... Who has four guitars and is orbiting the solar system with one of the grossest band names and one of the best rock records of the year? Diarrhea Planet, that’s who, and Turn to Gold is that garage-punk meteor, “where arena-rock ambition collides with D.I.Y. scuzz” (Pitchfork). For 30 years the Posies’ Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow have produced bracing power-pop records that show a deep understanding and appreciation for the pop-rock form and an ability to bend it/blast it to their will. Fan favorite Frosting on the Beater (1993) is also considered by critics one of the top pop-rock records of all time. Touring the world behind this year’s Solid States, the Posies will play a secret “Pop Up” show in San Diego on Saturday night that will not be in a music venue but in an unexpected, and by Posies standards, unique locale. According to website, “all the venues are cool, unlikely places in the city listed.” As of this typing, tickets are still available.... Miss tix to that, SanFran doom-metal band Om drones on at Casbah on their brief Left Coast swing after L.A. producer M. Geddes Gengras whose 2016 synth suites, Interior Architecture, remains a Sunday fave around the Monk house...the latest internet hit, indie-rock category, would be bedsit maestro Will Toledo. His Seattle-based band Car Seat Headrest (named for his first “audience,” playing in the back of the family station wagon) takes the all-ages stage at the Irenic in North Park behind this year’s well-received Matador record, Teens of Denial. Naked Giants and Hexa open that show...while she-metal tribute band Iron Maidens stack ’em at Brick by Brick...and electronic music producer Derek Smith, aka Pretty Lights, plugz in at Soma.
