See aerialists, acrobats, and clowns under a music-filled, blue-and-yellow big top. The animal-free circus offers an interactive preshow 30 minutes before each performance where children can try their hand at juggling, hula-hooping, balancing, and clowning. Highlights include trapeze artists the Flying Tabares (direct from a command performance for Prince Albert of Monaco) and 21-year old Patrick Marinelli, who gained a fan base after showing off his magic skills on America’s Got Talent. $15 to $35 general admission; $70 for reserved ringside seats.

Comic Fest

With panel discussions, an artist alley, tabletop gaming, cosplay, steampunk, and an exhibitor hall full of comics, books, toys, and collectibles. Comic Fest’s origin story: In 1969, when he was a teenage San Diego comics dealer, Mike Towry was part of the small group of fans who founded what became known as the San Diego Comic-Con. After the celebration of the 40th Comic-Con in 2009, he and other Comic-Con veterans agreed that San Diego needed a second convention, one more reminiscent of the early days. Comic Fest was born in 2012. Friday night is preview night. Runs Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. $25; four-day passes available.

Anya Marina and Panic Is Perfect

The former San Diego radio jock and coffee-shop performer (now based in New York City) has opened shows for national acts such as Chris Isaak and Jason Mraz and has become the go-to girl for TV (Grey’s Anatomy, Vampire Diaries) and film (Judd Apatow). Touring in support of her new record, Paper Plane, Marina has a chat with the Reader’s Ken Leighton before Friday’s show at the Loft at UCSD.

The team brings their ball-handling wizardry and basketball artistry to San Diego on their 90th-anniversary world tour with a lineup that includes fan-favorite Big Easy Lofton and female Globetrotter TNT Maddox.

Great Train Show

The nation’s largest touring model-train show arrives with hundreds of tables of scale models, accessories, and collectible toys as well as huge operating train exhibits. Local clubs will offer workshops and demonstrations. Kids can jump on the riding train and travel around the exhibition. $9 adults; children under 11 free.

Race to Save the Salton Sea

This event is taking outrigger canoe, SUP, and small-craft racing to the Salton Sea for the first time. The area hosts over 400 species of migratory birds, and many efforts have been made to try to reverse the Salton Sea’s failing health. Over 500 athletes will compete in outrigger and stand-up paddle races, and it’s free to watch. With food trucks, vendor stalls, native bird singing, and Polynesian entertainment in the evening.

Jonathan Richman and the Growlers

Probably (and unfortunately) best known for his turn as “the singing narrator” between acts in There’s Something About Mary, Richman is also a pioneer of the proto-punk era with his band the Modern Lovers (1970–1988) and an art-folk troubadour on the humorous side of Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan. Richman takes the stage at the Observatory North Park on Tuesday and Wednesday and is featured in Club Crawler.
