Salmon Portland Chase (1808-1873 was an American politician and sixth Chief Justice of the United States (1864-1873). Besides serving as 23rd governor of Ohio, Chase also served as the 25th Secretary of the Treasure. As Treasury secretary, Chase strengthened the federal government, introducing its first paper currency as well as a national bank, both during wartime. It was Chase, as well, who first coined the phrase that every piece of U.S. currency today bears. In 1956, it became the official national motto.
