Helix Brewing Co.

Breweries like to set aside some comfortable space for guests to enjoy a few beers. Many, maybe even most, could best be described as utilitarian. But these breweries went the distance to make sure their spaces stand out.

Place

Half Door Brewing Company

903 Island Avenue, San Diego

Half-Door Brewing Co.

Just a couple blocks from Petco Park, Half Door may be the most centrally urban brewery in town, but it doesn’t feel like it. The converted house has a warm, woodsy interior and two stories of porches for sipping beer and watching the world pass by.

Thorn Street Brewery

3176 Thorn Street, San Diego

Thorn St. Brewery

Off North Park’s beaten path, the small front bar’s publike vibe feels more welcoming than impressive. But sitting outside on the partially covered patio drinking a strong lineup of beers feels like an afternoon well spent.

Place

Helix Brewing Co.

8101 Commercial Street, La Mesa

Helix Brewing Co.

There’s no particular thing that makes this new brewery’s indoor/outdoor space comfortable and appealing. It’s more like everything’s been planned to present as clean and stylized. Same with the beer.

Place

Modern Times Lomaland Fermentorium

3725 Greenwood Street, San Diego

Place

Modern Times Flavordome

3000 Upas Street #102, San Diego

Modern Times Beer

Pick your favorite Modern Times location — both offer unique, conversation-starting decor and sly references to outdated technology.

The Point Loma brewery has a Post-It note mural and more room to maneuver.

The North Park tasting room features lampshades on the ceiling in a happening location.

Mike Hess Brewing North Park

Customers cross a small bridge overlooking the brewery’s shiny steel brewing system upon entering, giving this dog- and family-friendly tasting room a subtly defined sense of place and community, bolstered by old board games and food trucks.
