January 6 fishing report

Only a couple boats made it out yesterday to the kelp beds. The New Seaforth 1/2 Day PM run with 15 Anglers aboard reported *3

California Yellowtail, 25 Pacific Mackerel, 2 Pacific Bonito, and 1 Halfmoon* caught off La Jolla

27 Anglers aboard the Premier 1/2 Day AM run off the Point Loma kelp boated 215 Rockfish, 2 Lingcod

The Excel is still picking 100- to 200-pound grade Yellowfin Tuna and a handful of Wahoo from the Hurricane Bank, though the bite has slowed a bit due to the full moon and lack of current. They are due back at the dock Tuesday the 13th at 8 am for those who'd like to see the big fish unload.

The warm weather has pushed the trout bite to the edges of the day in most area lakes. The Sunfish and Largemouth Bass seem to be active in 5

to 20 feet of water in the late afternoon, maybe taking advantage of the added warmth. Even so, most of the Bass are holding at a more winter-like depth of 30 to 40 feet. Try working the drop-shot with your favorite plastic worm or a fly-lined nightcrawler and let it sink out.

In the early morning, the Rainbow Trout are responding well to Kastmasters, mini-jigs and fly-lined or floated nightcrawlers. Powerbait as always, gets some results, though it seems the better fish caught were on the artificials.
