Sunday 11
The fifth-best band out of Minneapolis, the Jayhawks, land at Belly Up Sunday night. Since the reissue of stellar three-record set Sound of Lies, Smile, and Rainy Day Music this past summer, the ’Hawks have been enjoying a second-wave of appreciation for the Americana they play so well. Without giving too much of the band’s recipe for success away, head 'Hawk Gary Louris says of the well-received records/shows, “We have been described as a very American band with a very British songwriting style.” It makes weird sense if you’re a fan of the brand, and if you are, you’re gonna love that one of Milwaukee’s finest, Trapper Schoep, is opening the show.... Around town Sunday: punk’d roots-rockers the Flesh Eaters (noneotherthan John Doe, Dave Alvin, Chris D, Bill Bateman, DJ Bonebrake, and Steve Berlin) take the Casbah stage. This is Dave Good’s Of Noted show this week, so flip or click there for more on the L.A. greats...comedian Tig Notaro takes her “Boyish Girl Interrupted” tour to the Irenic...while L.A.’s retro rock-roll quartet the Darlings wheels its vintage gear into the Soda after O.C. old-school punks Dime Runner.

Monday 12
From J Mascis country, both geographically (Amherst, Mass) and sonically (“molasses-thick grunge, burly classic rock”), singer/songwriter/guitarist Lemmy Gurtowsky and his Dino Jr–digging band California X hit the Hideout in advance of this week’s release of its sophomore set, Nights in the Dark. Listening to the title track presently, trying to t y pe whi le bangi ing my head not eaaasy so fugcx king gdood. Stoner-fuzz anthem, brah. Cannot wait.... Right down the street at Soda Bar, you’ve got a solid local lineup of Swim Team, Joyce, and Diatribes...and it’s another Monday at the Office with Lauren Scheff’s All-Star Jam Band rolling out the funk, soul, and rock-n-roll.

Local indie hits Pinback play Casbah on Wednesday.

Tuesday 13
Brit-rock heavy Midge Ure rolls solo into Casbah Tuesday night. Catch up with the ex-Ultravoxer in Bart’s interview for Blurt this week, “Ure legacy”...Sure Fire Soul Ensemble’s Hideout residency continues on into the New Year! Be sure to catch these cats as they light it up in City Heights on Tuesday nights...and the country-bluesy Wood Brothers (as in Medeski, Martin, and...) take the stage up at Belly Up.

Wednesday 14
Local indie hits Pinback will play Casbah Wednesday night. Not sure what Rob and Zach have been up to Pinback-music-making-wise, but they’re celebrating ten years of commercial breakthrough Summer in Abbadon with an eight-date roll up the West Coast. The Casbah site doesn’t say if there’s anyone else playing, but tix are $25 and very probably sold out by the time you read this.... Otherwise: Soda Bar hangs Red Paintings (“orchestral art rock from Australia”) after local indie acts Sound Lupus and the Steinbacks...and there’s always Gilbert Castellanos’s humpnight jazz jam at Seven Grand.
