Sempra Energy gave GOP assemblyman Brian Jones an undisclosed number of tickets to the Poinsettia Bowl on December 23 to watch Navy beat San Diego State, according to the utility’s lobbying report. The package was worth $220. Jones also picked up a $63 meal from Sempra at the Andaz Maui on November 18, coinciding with ex-Democratic state senator Steve Peace’s annual post-session Hawaiian blowout for legislators.

Citizens for Patient Rights, a political committee backed by the local medical marijuana industry, had a solid 2014, according to its February 9 disclosure filing with the county. The group came up with $58,088 in contributions from a variety of pot advocates, including the $22,000 from the United Patients Alliance of National City, $9750 from San Diego’s Cannabis Education Project, and $6000 from Highland Medical Packing of Vista.

Despite its money, the two causes backed by the committee, La Mesa’s Measure J and Encinitas’s Measure F, went down to defeat. Each would have repealed bans on the sale of medical marijuana. The treasurer of the group is listed as James Schmachtenberger, whose LinkedIn page says he is about to release a new movie, The Science of Weed, which will be “the most authoritative documentary ever made on medicinal marijuana use, with a gross-budget of over $1 million dollars.”
