John Joseph “Bloodclot” McGowan and his New York City metalcore crew Cro-Mags set up at Soda Bar after hardcore border band Bumbklaat and punk quartet Nerve Control. DJ Heather Hardcore will spin ’round sets. This tour marks 30 years since the release of the Mags’ hardcore staple, Age of Quarrel.... A few blocks west on El Cajon you’ll find the Hideout, where noise-rock artist Margaret Chardiet, aka Pharmakon, will headline sets after Die Misbildungen des Menschen and Év of Isis. Pharmakon’s latest, Bestial Burden, landed on most indie crits’ year-end best-of lists for its “push-and-push-harder tension, pummeling rhythms, swaths of power-electronics static, and her impressive, chilling howl” (Pitchfork).... Local post-punk standouts Barbarian will play a record-release show at Casbah. The record is called Night Blooms and is, as advertised, an intoxicating concoction of Nick Cave rocking Talking Heads. Idyll Wild, Fever the Ghost, and Mystery Cave open the show.... Poway punk band Unwritten Law is currently working on an acoustic album and will stretch it out in an acoustic set at Brick by Brick after Billabong model/surfer/singer-songwriter Lindsay Perry and local acoustic duo Ottopilot.
Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha hits the Hideout to spin DJ sets around local favorites Glasmus and Flaggs. We are super stoked on Flaggs’ teaser EP Beach in Her Hair and can’t wait to see what the year brings for the garage-rock quartet.... Best of the rest: rocksteady throwbacks Hepcat join Southland bopper Big Sandy & His Flyrite Boys at the Observatory North Park (née North Park Theatre)...Killer Pussy is currently playing their final California dates, including a show Friday night at Til-Two, where, appropriately enough, Evil Beaver opens. Scorpion Vs. Tarantula and Homeless Sexuals round out this rather randy bill...Bay Area blues-rockers Stone Foxes play Dave Good’s weekly Of Noted show at Casbah after psych-bent locals Shake Before Us and SanFran garage-rock band Coo Coo Birds. Flip or click to Dave’s take on throwback rock-rollers Stone Foxes for more on them and their latest, Twelve Spells...And up at Ché Café (yes, Ché Café), Nor’westers Weed and So Pitted will split a sludgy post-punk bill at the beleaguered campus collective. As of this typing, it’s advertised as a Ché show, but suggest you check before you trek.
Happy Valentine’s Day! Hope y’all have someone to hold. If not, just go hold a swell-looking random and tell ’em Cupid sent you. That’s what I do.... If you’re looking to get your boog on, lovers, shine up your shoes and get to the Ozomatli gig at Belly Up, where the Latin-flavored party band kicks off a two-night stay on the Solana Beach stage.... Looking for a hand-holding show? SanFran indie-folkie band Dodos are kind of touchy-feely — in a nonsickening way — and they’ll be at Casbah behind this year’s well-received Polyvinyl platter Individ. That desert-dwelling Springtime Carnivore opens the show with her brand of “technicolor daydream pop”.... Else: you’ve also got L.A. post-punk quartet Dirt Dress at the Soda Bar after Buttertones...Seattlites Naomi Punk (“one part metal, two parts punk, and one part psychedelic weird shit”) play Tower Bar with PC Worship and Subtropics...while up at the Epicentre in Mira Mesa, Sac-town hardcore act Trash Talk shares the all-ages stage with Rat King and Lee Bannon.
Follow the Crawler into next week.
