Straight outta Berserktown: art-punk Canada band Fucked Up will be missing the Royal Trux set at the Observatory Sunday night because they’ll be playing Casbah. The post-core six-piece is touring in support of Glass Boys, a sanded-down and nicely shellacked populist disc. “Get past the audacious concepts, the profanity, and Damian Abraham’s boarish grunt, and Fucked Up are essentially pragmatists, driven by a mission to rage within the machine.” Guess who published that. Hint: rhymes with bitchcork. Listen, they’re no Le Savy Fav (yes, I did), but essential, and crushing onstage. Toronto electro-psych trio Doomsquad open the go-to show. Digression alert: speaking of Le Savy Fav, did you know some of those guys are now in the house band on Late Night with Seth Meyers? Whaaaat.... Best of the rest around town Sunday night: SanFran garage-rock band (ca. 1965) the Chocolate Watchband will be closing out the weekend’s festivities at Tiki Oasis in the Crowne Plaza’s concert hall...while that “bipolar folk” band Kera & the Lesbians play a freebie at Soda Bar after Them Howling Bones and the Bad Vibes.
I’m not a big Monday night guy, but I will get it up for Screaming Females, who headline sets at Soda Bar after Vacation and Upset. I bought the Females’ latest, Rose Mountain, because I couldn’t get the single “Hopeless” out of my head. I figured if I immerse myself in Miss Poternaster’s grunge guitar, baked-throat tones, and Hester Prynne persona that I’d get over it. Psst, I didn’t. And now I’m the guy in “Hopeless”.... Otherwise: AJ Froman, Brothers Weiss, and Diamond Lakes fill a tasty throwback bill at Casbah’s Anti-Monday dealio.
From Santa Rosa, that Barsuk-y indie-rock trio Velvet Teen will take the stage at Seven Grand Tuesday night after our own Botanico Chango. The Teens are touring in support of this year’s All Is Illusory record, Casey Deitz’ first in nine years, while Botanico Chango are working on their debut LP. BC’s got an EP called Brit online, which sounds pop-rock solid, but someone should really take their Real Estate records away.... Up in the Heights, New Orleans hardcore upstarts and new Fat Wreck act Pears takes the Tower Bar with like-minded locals Caskitt and Bainbridge...while Soda Bar sets up Central Florida soft-rock duo Sales with Gloomies and Adult Films.
Dave Good breaks down his of-notable show, Metz, in this week’s issue, so be sure to flip or click there for his take on them. I was way into the power trio’s sludge-punk’d Metz until Metz II came along. It’s like the debut with a bag of chips. Challenging but delicious chips, like those Kettle jalapeno chips. Mm. And with Retox and Hot Nerds opening the show, this is the gig to get to on Wednesday, punky.... But if you prefer cheddar to chips, Rock and Roll Hall of Famers George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic will be funkin’ up House Blues on humpnight. Always a rump bumper.
