Brooklyn garage-rock trio Total Slacker follows Florida’s space-punk Flashlights into Casbah Sunday night. Total Slacker’s an appropriate name in that they tend to appropriate (the other meaning) ’90s mush-mouthed slack rockers Pavedoh and Sebament. Their debut, Thrashin’, killed it. This year’s Slip Away is too shoegazy, imho. Yes, Morticia, you can be too shoegazy. But they’re a live blast or your money back. Dave Good’s Of Noted act, Paws, is also on this killer triple bill, so flip or click there for more on them.... Utterwise: Til-Two hosts L.A. garage-psych collective Jail Weddings...whilst “melodic-death-metal giants” Arsis play Porter’s Pub.
The big gig in town Monday night’d be Swedish indie-pop singer Li Lykke Timotej Svensson Zachrisson, aka Lykke Li, at the North Park Theatre. The dark soprana is out to tout this year’s critical hit, I Never Learn. Another Swedish singer, the hip-hoppy Mapei, opens the — uh-oh — now-sold-out show. Sorry. Moving right along... Deuces are wild at Casbah’s Anti-Monday meetup this week, as L.A. afro-punk duo the Bots headlines sets by our own two-man bands Badabing and the Pheasants. Check out the Bots on this week’s pod.... Miss the door in Middletown, the Dig buries Soda Bar in Strokesian New York guitar rock after Style Like Revelators and Dinosaur Ghost...while up in Solana Beach, alt-rock trio Better Than Ezra’s at Belly Up behind their brand-spanking new t’do, All Together Now. “Customers who bought this item also bought: Counting Crows, Train, Maroon 5, Sloan...” Shall I go on?
Want to watch a guy living a dream? Check out some of Zammuto’s shorts at zammutosound.com or the full 16-minute film at pitchfork.com/tv. Mad sound scientist/guitarist Nick Zammuto was one half of electro-pop duo the Books, a sound-collage project that didn’t end well. Glue and noodles everywhere! With his wife and kids, Zammuto is now living a handmade, homegrown, organic-music-making life in the Virginia hills that adds a modern-rock soundtrack to the idea of idyll. Zammuto and his crew are touring in support of this year’s Anchor and will play Casbah Tuesday after Au’s multi-instrumentalist mastermind Luke Wyland for a night of fringy folktronica.... “The surfing keeps me alive, and the music keeps me grounded.” Whatever, dood. Frothy soft-rocker Donavon Frankenreiter and his mustache play a Live on PBS set at Belly Up Tuesday night...while the self-proclaimed “hippie with soul” he typed despite his deep and possibly brain-damaging eyeroll, Allen Stone, and Beantown funk-rock band Bad Rabbits split a bill at House of Blues.
Dapper New York City act Interpol will be at House of Blues humpnight behind this year’s goth plop El Pintor. Opening act Rey Pila seems interesting, though. They’re a quartet from Mexico City that plays what they dub “psychedelic Motown,” like TV on the Radio fronted by Ariel Pink. Their refs, not mine.... Else: L.A.-via-N.Y. pop-rock singer/songwriter LP plays Casbah behind her major-label debut, Forever for Now...while San Diego’s sepia-toned folkies Midnight Pine take the stage at Seven Grand behind their SDMA-nominated record Buried. I just saw that Midnight Pine’s also nominated for Artist of the Year and will be performing at the Humphreys shindig October 6. Good for them, and congratulations to all the nominees! Went back and forth on that exclamation mark...just thought you should know.
