Trumpet master Gilbert Castellanos hosts the Young Lions Series at Croce’s Park West (2760 5th Avenue). This week’s featured artist is saxophonist Chaz Cabrera. Castellanos will play the first set (7:00 p.m., $5 cover), then rush off to the Jazz Jam Session at Seven Grand Whiskey Bar (3054 University Avenue) for the 9:00 p.m. downbeat, featuring Joshua White on piano, Rob Thorsen on bass, and Brett Sanders on drums. No cover charge, musicians bring your instruments!

Thursday 27
The Joshua White Trio with Ben Wanicur on bass and Danny Campbell on drums take care of business at Dizzy’s (4275 Mission Bay Drive). 8 p.m., $15 cover.... The Matt Smith Neu Jazz Trio hits 98 Bottles (2400 Kettner Boulevard), featuring Smith on drums, Harley Magsino on bass, and Ed Kornhauser on piano. 8 p.m., $15 cover.... Guitar duo Barry Jaquess and Alex Lopez perform at Wine Steals (1234 University Avenue) from 7-9 p.m. Free!

Violinist Jamie Shadowlight presents a tribute to West Side Story at 98 Bottles with a Southern California supergroup featuring Gilbert Castellanos on trumpet, Mikan Zlatkovich on piano, Katie Thiroux on bass, and Monette Marino on percussion. 8 p.m. $20 at the door, and I predict standing-room-only.... Flute virtuoso Lori Bell performs with Interplay, featuring Ron Satterfield on guitar/vocals and L.A. pianist Dave Mackay at the La Jolla Community Center (6811 La Jolla Boulevard). Tickets are $20 (pre-sale 858 459-0831) or $25 at the door, which includes valet parking. 8 p.m.... Dizzy’s hosts the 20-piece Binational Mambo Orchestra under the leadership of trumpeter Bill Caballero at 8 p.m., $15.... And finally, Besos de Coco with Lorraine Castellanos on guitar and voice, Evona Wascinski on bass, and Claudia Gomez doing the tap-dance-percussion thing perform at the Westgate Hotel (1055 2nd Avenue). Get your swing on with an early afternoon performance by Gypsy Groove at Nate’s Garden Grill in City Heights (3120 Euclid Avenue) 2–4 p.m. Free!...
