Seems everyone’s going green in Grantville

After Navajo Community Planners, Inc., heard a presentation on June 16 about progress on the Grantville-focused community-plan amendment, the planning group received an update from two men who applied for a conditional-use permit to operate Grantville Greens medical marijuana dispensary. During the update, a resident told planners about three other applications.

The city allows four dispensaries in each council district, and Grantville is one of the District 7 neighborhoods that meets zoning requirements. However, the amendment proposes four new zoning categories that add residential use, modifications that would prohibit dispensaries.

City of San Diego senior planner Brian Schoenfisch gave the board a timeline that starts with releasing the amendment draft environmental-impact report on July 18 for a 45-day public review. The amendment would come to the planning group for a September vote and then to the city council for approval. The "hope" was to have it "wrapped up" by year-end, Schoenfisch said.

Ron Miller and Nick Hosig told Navajo Planners on April 21 about plans to apply for a permit to operate a dispensary in a 700-square-foot site they're renting on the 4400 block of Glacier Avenue.

This month, Miller said the plan is for a 600-square-foot dispensary. He also spoke about an illegal dispensary across the alley. "It's not us," he said, adding that they notified city attorney Jan Goldsmith about it.

John Pilch, San Carlos Area Council vice president, spoke about three "notices of application" issued by the City's Development Services Department. The forms give public notice about "medical marijuana consumer cooperative" (MMCC) applications.

Applicant Mehrdad Banki wants to operate Green Tree Holistic in a 1385 square-foot suite in a building on the 5900 block of Mission Gorge Road. A June 17 search showed a Green Tree Holistic Facebook page. for a Santa Ana location.

Cynthia Morgan was the contact for "4365-4375 Twain MMCC," to operate in an existing 7071-square-foot building" on the 4300 block of Twain Avenue. There was a Facebook page for OneWorld Collective at one of those addresses.

Sara Cadenas was the contact "to operate" 3455 Camino Del Rio South MMCC in a 4877-square-foot building. The address led to Kindest Meds on The Mission Valley Planning Community Group will review that application.

Pilch said, "I suggest this [update] is tabled until there is official notice" for Grantville Greens.

Planning group chair Matt Adams said, "I'm going to err on the side of full public disclosure. They offered" the update, and other applicants were welcome to speak.

A woman who declined to give her name said she was "concerned about youth use" and that the city was "not able to close" illegal dispensaries. "It seems bizarre [to discuss permits]. The size of one is 7071 square feet. That's like a Walmart."

Adams said a full public hearing will be held, and information will be posted on Navajo Planners' website.

So 7071 square feet is "like a Walmart" says the ridiculous comment. Talk about hyperbole. According to Wikipedia, Walmart stores are "51,000 to 224,000 square feet, with an average store covering about 102,000 square feet."
