Monday 14
A tribute to the late San Diego tenor saxophone giant Gary LeFebvre will be held at Dizzy’s (4275 Mission Bay Drive) featuring the West City Big Band under the direction of Rey Vinole. Concert time is 8:00 p.m., and the tickets are $15.

Wednesday 16
Trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos presents the Young Lions Series at Croce’s Park West (2760 Fifth Avenue) each week featuring an up-and-coming jazz musician under the age of 25. Downbeat is at 7:00 p.m. $5 cover. Castellanos plays the first set, then heads to the weekly Jam Session at Seven Grand (3054 University Avenue) where the music starts at 9:00 p.m. No cover, musicians bring your horns!

NYC vocalist Kendra Shank will play a quartet date at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library (1008 Wall Street) with Geoffrey Keezer on piano, Hamilton Price on bass, and Zach Harmon on drums. Tickets are $27 for the general public, $21 for Athenaeum members. 8:00 p.m. … singer-songwriter Nina Francis is having an EP-release event with Peter Sprague, Nora Germain, and Max Wagner at 98 Bottles (2400 Kettner Boulevard). Head north to the Thorton Winery (32575 Rancho California Road, Temecula) to catch the Pat Metheny Unity Group/ Bruce Hornsby with Sonny Emory, the concert begins at 7:00 p.m. General Admission tickets are $ 95 … the Bob Magnusson Trio with Lori Bell on flute and Jim Plank on percussion are happening at Harry’s Bar & American Grill (4370 La Jolla Village Drive) starting at 6:00 p.m., no cover … the San Diego Jazz Collective plays the Festival of the Bells at the Mission Basilica (10818 San Diego Mission Road) at 3:30 p.m., free admission.

Start the jazz day early with the Sunday Jam session at 98 Bottles presented by the Matt Smith Neu Jazz Trio featuring Ed Kornhauser on piano and Harley Magsino on bass from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. No cover charge, musicians are encouraged to sit in … there is a CD-release event for SiVa, a Latin jazz ensemble featuring Freddy Lanuza, Frankie Sarmiento, Mikey Manglicmont, Chris Barger, and Celeste Lanuza at Dizzy’s. Downbeat is at 8:00 p.m., ticket price is $15, and that includes a free copy of the CD.
