2013 Street Style Round-Up

The good, the ho-hum, and the ugly

Fashion was all over the map in 2013. I like to think of it as the year of individual style. We saw a lot of camo-inspired gear — combat boots and military jackets. There was a resurgence of plaid and florals. There were burly beards, an abundance of tattoos and beanies galore. There were those of us who stepped out only in vintage frocks and others who went for a New Age spin on the 1990s grunge trend. The biggest staple pieces were over the knee boots, full skirts, statement coats, slip dresses, Aztec prints, leopard print, nail art, crop tops, and anything grunge revival. 2013 can best be summed up as the year of the choose-your-own-fashion adventure. Below is my 2013 San Diego Street Style round up. Included is the good, the ho-hum, and the ugly.

Heidi Hoffman wearing a Zara jacket

I always ask my Street Style subjects: What are your current favorite, and least favorite, style trends? Among the top answers for 2013 were anything military-inspired, over the knee boots, full skirts, ankle boots, and leather jackets.

Both Heidi Hoffman (in University Heights) and Daniel Barnier (in La Jolla) wore military-style jackets. Hoffman bought her olive green jacket from Zara while Barnier picked his coat up at H&M.

In Mission Valley, Regina Desanctis wore a mid-calf vintage polka dot 1950’s full skirt. She paired her skirt with a crop top from American Apparel and a simple brown thrift store belt. She carried an army-green Supreme surplus bag.

In Carlsbad, Sophia Metcalf wore a traditional Levi's black leather jacket paired with Dolce Vita boots from Urban Outfitters. Metcalf paired her look with dark burgundy skinny jeans.

San Diegans I spoke to said they most wished crop tops, beanies, and Aztec print would disappear in 2014.

Yesenia Godinez in BDG jeans

In Solana Beach, Sasha Barkanic embraced one of San Diego's least-favorite trends in a jet-black beanie (alongside friend Zanni Watkins). At Fashion Valley Mall, Yesina Godinez channeled her inner Miley Cyrus by hacking apart an old chevron-print dress and fashioning her own crop top. Meanwhile in La Mesa, Adam Sisco wore a vintage Aztec print women's coat while busking on the street during Oktoberfest.
