Tijuana meat quality called into question

Lack of inspections, party politics blamed

Tijuana's La Segunda newspaper this week offered a report that sanitary meat — be it beef, chicken, or pork — is out of control in Tijuana, devoid of any kind of quality control or review.

According to the article, meat inspection is glossed over at best and non-existent at worst. Carlos Garay Sánchez, director of Grupos Liberales, points to the PAN party as the reason meat has become suspect in the city. The party allegedly let meat inspection slide since 1989, when stringent laws were once in effect.

The article states that under municipal law, the governance of meat quality comes under the auspices of city hall, and, of late, says Garay, this quality control is non-existent and market meat is untraceable to its origins.

“There are no guarantees for the meat sold, its processing or origin,” said Garay.

There is an expression in Spanish, where one is warned not to accept gato por liebre or “cat for rabbit” (i.e., “Don’t buy a pig in a poke”), and Garay feels that it is time for city hall to step up to the plate, take the bull by the horns, and own up to its responsibilities.

Surprise, surprise! Carlos Garay Sánchez is a politician affiliated with the PAN's arch-enemy, the PRI. So I'd take whatever he says with a grain of salt. He would say or do almost anything to discredit the PAN.

In over two decades there, I never had a single issue. In fact, they will grind beef and pork fresh for you in the larger markets. Is it under-inspected? No idea, but I have more confidence in meat I've bought and cooked in Baja that from some places in San Diego. That's just me, everyone has their own comfort level when it comes to food. But is it political? Or how about ultimately, isn't just about everything political?

I appreciate that this piece contained no Anthony Weiner jokes, by the way.

One thing I would be leery of? All of the poultry that is some sort of convoluted mix of chicken and turkey and ostrich (in lunch meat and hot dogs and so on). You're seeing that even in San Diego now. It's in Mexico as well, and not that I'm and expert but I stay away from that stuff.

Why would Carlos Garay Sánchez make false claims about uninspected meat in Tijuana to discredit the PAN party when the mayor of Tijuana, Carlos Bustamante, who would be responsible for inspecting Tijuana meat is a member of the PRI party?
