San Diego's One-of-a-Kind Spirits Festival

Centre City Development Corporation consultant Alan Edwards reported one of the more interesting positions, owner and president of the San Diego Spirits Festival, described as an “annual festival promoting local businesses” whose worth he valued at between $10,000 and $100,000; his share of the gross was reportedly in the same range. The event “is a nationally acclaimed celebration of cocktail culture and is the premiere west coast spirits festival held on the beautiful San Diego bay,” according to its website. “With competitions, tastings, seminars and parties, the festival offers a one-of-a-kind opportunity for brands to support and garner recognition amongst San Diego’s up-and-coming cocktail community and beyond.” This year’s event is to be held on June 25 and 26 at the Port of San Diego’s cruise ship terminal on the Broadway Pier. Edwards also owns DestinationWebCam, which he valued at between $100,000 and $1 million and says made between $10,000 and $100,000 last year.

Ah, drinking...when the going gets rough, there's money to be made in alcohol. Although Edwards' attendees will likely be well-heeled friends of the CCDC/Port/City crowd, the peons of San Diego seem also to be focused on throwing their disposable income down the hatch in the local bars. Because...why? I don't know...maybe spending money on bar-priced alcohol is a substitute for saving for a house you will never be able to afford...or because the low-paying service job you have in San Diego leaves you longing for intellectually stimulating company found only at bars? Here's an example of the prose in a recent U-T article about Can't-Miss Drinking Events:

"North Park Pub Sprawl is more of a self-guided stumbling situation, where you you lurch around and get drink specials from 11 participating bars."

"Like an airport shuttle, except this Brewery Tours bus is delivering you to your next buzz - for free: It's the DrinkAbout Bus! And for four hours on Wednesday, April 20, from 7 to 11 p.m. you can be driven to [8] watering holes [in Normal Heights and South Park]. Bonus: Sleep it off on the shuttle between these bars."

Whoopeee! Make some noise and wake up the residents of the old inner-city hoods. Blow all your paycheck on booze. It helps the local economy when nothing else does!

$50 to walk in the door? Yes, another way to party without having to worry about running into any locals. Why not just say "invitation only"? We have great events to enjoy in San Diego that are for the people, this just doesn't seem to be one of them. Adams Ave, La Mesa Oktoberfest, the pub crawl are all reasons to enjoy city life here. Yes, our group will be passing on this one.

That's a classy logo they have. You get legs in the air for only $50? Bargoon!
