Hippie to the Hippie

Thursday 24
Catchiest sets to get to this week are two SanFran bands, current standard bearers of the Bay Area’s indie scene, Ty Segall and Sonny & the Sunsets, at Bar Pink Thursday night. Segall is the garage-pop player picking up the mantle of Jay Reatard. With retro arrangements and vocal hooks informed by early R&B, Segall’s new Goner collection Melted garnered a respectable 7.5 from Pitchfork last week. Sonny Smith’s new four-piece signed to Fat Possum for Tomorrow Is Alright, a lo-fi West Coast folk-pop affair that strums, hums, and chimes to great effect and some pretty dark depth. Think Modern Lovers doing doo-wop. Check it out: myspace.com/sonnythesunsets.... Tin Can Ale House stacks up electro-pop acts Head Like a Kite, Lion Cut, and Smoosh. Smoosh is that trio of Seattle sisters Asy, Chloe, and Maia that broke in ’04 with teeny-bop batch She Like Electric. Having since signed to indie stalwart Barsuk, the girls are out to tout this year’s World’s Not Bad. So young, so naïve. Interesting Wiki-note, Smoosh is, to some extent, a product of Chloe’s drum teacher Jason McGerr, drummer for Death Cab for Cutie, a former Barsuk band. Also, they’re all vegetarians, so they should probably go on before Lion Cut.... Austin big band Grupo Fantasma brings their Grammy-nominated Latin funky fun to Casbah.... While my dentist’s “all-time favorite band” (no kidding) Flock of Seagulls lands at 4th&B. Hi, doc. Yea, I’m flossing.

Friday 25
One for the ducktail-and-pocket-chains crowd. Dave Gonzalez and the Stone River Boys bring the Texas twang to Casbah with barroom rockers the Bedbreakers and El Monte Slim. Former Paladin Gonzalez is one of the all-time great SoCal guitarists, informing rockabilly wannabes and schooling cowpunk when it was still a calf. Dave Good’s got an interview with the cat in this week’s “Blurt,” if you want to flip there fo’ mo’.... In keeping with its old-school new-wave weekend, 4th&B stages them “White Punks on Dope,” the Tubes. Always outrageous live, Fee Waybill’s been rocking this thing since 1973! Last year he released rarities and outtakes tracks Mondo Birthmark for you completists.... Radio Room dials in local indie-rockers Irradio, A Scribe Amidst the Lions, Shapes of Future Frames, and Ray Argyle.... And electrojam dance band Jamuel Saxon will roll their new joint, Landmines & Chandeliers, into Whistle Stop behind Treasure Mammal. Check Chad’s “Blurt” piece this week on JamSax’s Keith Milgaten.

Saturday 26
This year’s O.B. Street Fair and Chili thing goes off Saturday from 10a till 8p, with a buncha bands for the barefootin’ patchouli set. If you’re into spicy eats and sunny fun, keep your ears peeled for Electric Waste Band, Stick Figure, Wendy Bailey, and appropriately enough, Mike Pinto and the Red Not Chili Peppers.... There’s another big food-and-tunes thing in town at Radio Room’s Change the Station BBQ Blowout, which goes off from 3p till 1a and features eclectic alterna-rock sets by the Strikers, Londons Falling, Getdown, Napoleon Complex, etcet etcet. Go here for the rest: theradioroom.com/calendar.... I noticed a couple weeks back that Dizzy’s was hosting shows at the Culy Warehouse again (338 Seventh Ave.). This Saturday night, the San Diego jazz joint stages a tribute to Thelonious Monk, with Mikan Zlatkovich sitting at the keys, supported by Gilbert Castellanos on horns, Rob Thorsen on bass, and Kevin Kanner on traps. Best bebopping bang for your buck right there, jazz fan.... Pall Jenkins’s grimey, dubby, clubby Mr. Tube and the Flying Objects sails into Casbah with CD-releasing slo-fi four-piece Little White Teeth. Jenkins produced LWT’s s/t debut effort, and this summer the Teeth’ll be on the road with SD indie hits Pinback. Black Hondo sets the stage.

Sunday 27
Find yourself with a funked-up soul Sunday night? Then a little Dap’ll do ya, my friend, as Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings rule Belly Up. This big brass-n-sass band out of NYC just dropped their fourth proper, the very recommendable I Learned the Hard Way.... Sleeper-set alert: Portland indie-pop vocal group the Quick & Easy Boys play Bar Pink behind their spanking-new t’do Red Light Rabbit, a collection that comes off like a poppier TV on the Radio. Check ’em out: myspace.com/thequickandeasyboys.... Else: there’s one of them 94/9 freebies at Casbah. This one features the bands from this year’s Staring at the Sun comp. And, more importantly, Lucha Libre eats.

Monday 28
Casbah rolls out Wallpaper for this week’s Anti-Monday meet-up. Electro-pop Oaklander Eric Frederic’s alter-ego show is like P-Funk via autotune with acid wit. It doesn’t suck, and I’m no fan of this stuff. Check out “I Got Soul, I’m So Wasted” off of his latest, Doodoo Face. Hard typing, believe me, but fun listening. Like-minded Los Angelino Kenan Bell and our own odd-popster Rafter go first.

Tuesday 29
Local duo Blessure Grave digs in at Tin Can Ale House Tuesday night with their goth-pop group of friends to play you some of their new stew, Stranger in the House.... And Secretly Canadian cult fave acoustic rocker Damien Jurado will play from this year’s crit hit Saint Bartlett at Casbah.

Wednesday 30
Head uptown humpnight for Imaad Wasif and Apes of Wrath at Bar Pink...Gloomsday, Lozen, and Ghettoblaster at Soda Bar...and Nothington at Ruby Room with Riot Before and Heartsounds.... Or downtown to Tin Can Ale House, which serves up Stage Kids, Dreamgoatz, Montucky, and Marcelo Radulovich.... Casbah catches doom-metal group Saint Vitus.... While way the fug up there, at Ramona Mainstage, old-school rap group the Sugar Hill Gang will “hip-hop hippie to the hippie” in the sticks. How weird is that?
