Lovers Are Lunatics

Thursday 17
You say night-zer, I say nit-zer... Industrial dance band Nitzer Ebb flows into Brick by Brick tonight. The trio has experienced resurgent interest in their throwback beats and dark clang on the turntables of today’s DJs. The Brits are here to deliver tour-only originals Industrial Complex. Career retrospective Body of Work (2006), though, gives you the band’s original ‘80s recordings and current club-kid remixes, if that’s your bag.... Traveling troubadour Jake Smith, aka the White Buffalo, roams into Casbah behind his latest, Hogtied Revisited, a heavy-hearted acoustic-rock resurrection of his debut full-length Hogtied Like a Rodeo. Blackout Party and Rachael Cantu up first.... U.K. trip-hop duo Zero 7 conjures new t’do Yeah Ghost at House of Blues. The Grammy nominees for Best Electronica/Dance Album will be supported on tour by singers Abimaro and Olivia Chaney. I guess the guys don’t sing. New York band Phantogram will set the downtown stage.... L.A. post-rockers El Ten Eleven land the mechanized dance jams of last year’s These Promises Are Being Videotaped at Bar Pink. Dude shreds a double-neck guitar.... Radio Room dials up an alt-rock triple bill with Angelinos Los Hollywood and local border bands Meluplus and Rodeo Drive.

Friday 18
It’s time for Gary Shuffler’s birthday bash at Casbah, when the man of a thousand voices (and a smashing wardrobe) dons this year’s itch. Will it be Ziggy? Queenly? Fat, bald Axl? No matter, it’s always a good time. Go spill one with Gary, the Cats from Japan, and D Pain down at the Middletown mainstay.... Indie kids Writer and Black Mamba pull into Whistle Stop for the South Park bar’s annual Christmas sweaters and long johns party.... Uptowners: shine up your skids, kids, you’re in dance-band land Friday night, as Latin lounge lizards Agua Dulce heat up Ken Club and nu-wave crew Bobby Fantasy brings the beats off their debut, Can’t Stop the Night, to Hillcrest hideaway Ruby Room.

Saturday 19
El Vez and the Lovely Elvettes join Los Straitjackets to celebrate Mex-mas at Casbah. El Vez is Robert Lopez of local punk perennials the Zeros, who have enjoyed an active reunion year. If you’ve never seen Lopez shake his kitsch-rock moneymaker, don’t miss these Saturday-night sets to get to. ¡Viva Christmas!... O.C. superheroes the Aquabats flock to House of Blues Saturday night. The pop-punk quintet stashes just enough ska in their utility belts to keep the party bouncing. The uninitiated should check out the Charge! CD/DVD for what’s in store. Suburban Legends and Supernova hit it first.... Soma stages Newport hardcores Saosin, who are out in support of their second studio set In Search of Solid Ground. Minneapolis rap-core crew P.O.S. plays too.... Apparently, it’s simian night at Brick by Brick, as the Bay Park bar stages party-rock bands Sprung Monkey and Monkeys in Space.... Country-fried rock-n-soul rowdies the Desert Diamonds shine on Ken Club.... And there’re a couple of cool cover groups tonight, too, with Pink Froyd playing Winstons and Hedwig tribute Midnight Radio at Ruby Room.

Sunday 20
Anybody else do a double take when they saw '70s Brit punx the Boys (aka the Yobs) listed at Radio Room Sunday night? Far as I can tell it’s not them and it’s not there. Here’s the (current) web lode: it’s Honest John Plain, formerly of the Boys, who’s supposedly playing with O.C. acts the Stitches and Crazy Squeeze at the Doll Hut (Linda’s Doll Hut?) in Anaheim. Don’t plan your road trip yet, diehard, wait and see how this plays out. Possible that Honest John’s hittin’ both bars?... Downtown, House of Blues has your daily allowance of power pop, with Poway punks Unwritten Law headlining and Buckfast Superbee, Chaser, and So Long Davey warming the room.... Riverside ska-punks the Voodoo Glow Skulls light up Soma’s side stage after like-minded locals Bucket of Fish waft a CD-release set.... Speaking of CD releasers, Nautical Disaster will sink one at Bar Pink for their “newest musical recording Amantes Amentes.” (Amantes sunt amentes is Latin for “lovers are lunatics.” I think.) Ladyfingers and Behind the Wagon in support.... And Christmas at the Casbah continues with a full-on fun ‘n’ funky freebie, featuring Lady Dottie and the Diamonds and the Styletones. The letter of the day is f.

Monday 21
This week’s Anti-Monday meet-up hosts folk-punk pub rockers the Downs Family and C.L.A. (née Carnivorous Lunar Activity). C.L.A. is a quartet of stately scenesters — Steve Poltz, Dennis Borlek, Sam Chammas, and Sharon Daddi — who do this annual reunion in honor of their late pal and bandmate Steve Foth. This year is the ten-year anniversary of Foth’s tragic death.... Uptown, Soda Bar taps a draught of Nothingful, a one-man band with an experibental ment. Taste this:

Tuesday 22
The indie kids of Republic of Letters, Hotel St. George, and funnin’ acousti-punks Canton Mudders fill a Tuesday-night bill at Casbah.

Wednesday 23
Do you like to boogie? Belly Up books the Greyboy Allstars for a night full of funk’d-up dance jams...and, for you vinyl fetishists, the Jivewire DJs will be spinning hits at Casbah. Remember: friends don’t let friends dance drunk.
